RACING NEWS.
FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) Second day at Avondalo on Monday. Racing at Geraldine on Thursday and Saturday with Hawko’s Bay also on ■ the latter day. " ' ' Nominations for all events at tho MasteAon meeting on October 19 close on Monday, September 30. Avola is reported from Taranaki to havo foaled a nice filly to Diacquenod and will visit the same sire again. P. Johnson has Horomea back in work at New Plymouth and the chestnut mare is stated to havo freshened up during her spell. Mollison’s prize winnings at the close of last season amounted to £26,454 and, with £I2OO attached to his initial performance this season he has raised his total to £27,654. • ~ The Taranaki owner-trainer, P. Tito, has I recommissioned Whisogne at Pihama and he is to be given plenty of schooling in tho hope that he might develop into a proficient jumper. Coon Song (Hunting Song-Sangfroid) was emitted from the list of horses left in the Great Northern Guineas which raises the total to 24.- Goon Song is now trained at Foxton. Tho Otago gelding Overhaul is to bo treated to a lengthy spell, after which he will be got ready for another' jumping campaign. He did remarkably in liis first season over hurdles. A. G. Dison, private trainer to Mrs M. A. Perry, is a regular attendant at tho Napier Park tracks with Tiega, Outward Bound and Portray, comments a Hawke’s Bay writer. The party, adds the writer, all look well forward. Childsplay is reported to bo still in a bad way and it is doubtful whether she can bo saved for stud purposes. A southern writer states that she has put up a gamo fight for life and it is to bo hoped that her pluek will bo rewarded. Advice from Sydney indicates that Phar Lap is now a slightly better favourite than Honour for the A.J.C. Derby. New Zealand has thus the distinction of furnishing the first and second favourites for the impending classic at Randwick. Marriage Bell, a highly bred mare by Tea Tray from Gold Treasure, who was 1 sent across to Now South Wales last year to be mated with Canusa, has made an addition to the Stud Book in the shape of a colt. Canusa is an English-bred horse by tho St. Leger winner, Swynford. Seagravo is tho name which had been accorded tho two-year-old son of Arausio and Marty who was purchased at tho Trcntham sales last January by the Dunedin owner, Mr G. J. Barton, for 375 guineas. He is a full-brother to Rascal, Early Dawn, Kilmis3, Hymarty and Co. Essential, Real Estate and Trib have been doing useful work over the obstacles at Napier Park, comments a Hawke’s Bay scribe. Probably none of the trio will over develop into top-fiighters in the lepping branch, but, well placed, they should provo capablo of paying their way. Tho brood mare Solitudo, by Seaton Dclaval from Solitary, is reported to have thrown a colt foal to Gam®on. The last named, who was never raced, is a three-year-old colt by Romeo from Akahau, by Thurnham fnoin Takahau. A ’ two-year-old full-sister to Phar Lap, who ran second to Mollison in the Chelmsford Stakes recently/ is owned hy the Hawke’s Bay owner, Mr J. Gatenby, who purchased the filly for 60 gns. as a; yearling. The excellent efforts iof her Brother in Australia will probably enhance her value.. After running unluckily in several races in Victoria, the New Zealand-bred gelding Waicullus scored a victory in the Aspendale Park Handicap of .£3OO, li miles, in which he carried 8.7 and beat a field of eight. Waicullus was sold recently in Melbourne and treated his new owner to a win straightaway. According to a London writer, the sum paid by tho American sportsman, Mr John Whitney for Royal Ministrel when he bought the four-year-old‘ son of Tetratema in June last was £17,000. In the interval Royal Minstrel has won in stake-money about £14,354, and, even though ho does not make any further addition under that heading, his potential value as a siro must be estimated very highly.
Tho Paper Money—Sprig of Erin (imp.) gelding, Bather O’Flynn, has boon taken up again by F. J. McKay in the far south follpwing on a lengthy spell at Mr W. T. Hazlett’s New River stud. Despite the fact that one of his forelegs bears marked evidenco of having been caught in a wire fence, the aged galloper is sound enough and it is very plain that he has been well cared for during his period of liberty, as ho is on the burly side. '. It is somewhat peculiar that in connection with the Now Zealand Cup, although it has bfeen established since 1883, it has only onco been secured by a penalised competitor, this happening when Sunart proved victorious in 1924. Originally handicapped at 7st. 121 b., he carried Bst. 31b., in consequence of having won the Teono Makitonoro Handicap at the Otaki meeting about six weeks prior to tho date of the contest for the New Zealand Cup. Hitherto trained and raced in the North Island, Speed Light has been slow in coining to hand in the bracing southern climate, but she is now progressing nicely for F. J. McKay at Invercargill. The Paper Money—Simper mare may not be caught at her best for engagements round about November, but she should furnish into a smart summer galloper. Lucky Light, the elder full-sister to Speed Light, on the other hand, is getting through a steady and beneficial preparation. So far, she has not displayed form equal to that, of her younger sister, but there are prospects that she will race to bettor advantage during the present turf term than was the case last season. Somo aristocratic juveniles havo been nominated tor the Nursery Handicap in connection with tho Spring meeting ot the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, Simba (Psychology—Tressida) being a half-brother to Runnymede, Raasuy, Ganymede and My Ownj Crysology, by Psycluology—Desert Gold; Rapalla, by Grandcourt —Parley, tho latter mare being by All Black out of Pourparler (full sister to Bobrikoff); Alliance (Arausio —Adelica) half-brother to Warplano; Henry of Navarro (Arausio — Matty) half-brother to Millais; Wedded (Leighton-r-Lady Ball) half-sister to Guy Ballerina), and Ruby's step, full-sister to High Court, being amongst those paged for the event. There is no more forward galloper on the Southland tracks at the present timo than Gooinassie, and -the Some Boy 11. mare will probably bo found competing at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring gathering, comments a southern writer. After ono cr two races she will rank as a very fit mare, and probably a decidedly useful ono, as she is possessed cf marked courage and the ability to travel fast for six or eight furlongs. A younger sinter to J. McChesney’s well-known performer referred to is working along soundly, but, beyond a few smart sprints of two or three furlongs, she has not yet been extended.
