ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE.

PRISONER SHOT. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Sept. 20. A sensational happening occurred at Mt. Eden prison at half past four o’clock this afternoon. While working in the prison yard, John Buckley, aged 27, an habitual criminal, slipped away and attempted to escape by scaling the outer wall. He had actually scaled the wall and was running in the open ground on the other side when lie was detected. A warder shouted to him to stop. Buckley did not do so and the waraer fired, wounding Buckley in the back. The prisoner was taken to the Auckland Hospital and his condition to-night was stated to be' serious. Buckley, who is a notorious burglar, escaped from Mount Eden gaol last year and was at large for seven weeks.
