SYDNEY’S FIRST DOCTOR. There were no two-guinea consultations for Sydney’s first dootor. He was paid 5s a day and retired on a pension of £SO. This pioneer was Thomas Arundell who was appointed surgeon to the first fleet and acted as surgeon to the little colony of New South Wake with headquarters at Parramatta from 1789 to 1795. Dr. John MacPherson, lecturing on the “History of Medicine in Australia” at the Congress in Sydney the other day, said that the dearth of doctors then' was so great that Arundell was recalled from retirement to aot as apothecary.
