PERSONAL. (From Our Own Correspondent). , MARTON, Sept. 21. Mr and Mrs C. H. E. Rhodes, former Marton residents and now of Wanganui, were visitors to the town this week for the spring flower show, Mr. M. Nicol, the jockey who was injured at the recent Marton races, left the private hospital on Wed. nesday and expects to bo ablo to follow his occupation very shortly. Mr H. A. Shanks, Methodist minister at Taihapc, is visiting Tauranga. Mr R. D. Wilson, postmaster Taihapc, is at present on loave and is being relieved by Mr C. A. McLaren, Mr W. H. Bowick, of Huntervi'lo, is visiting Wellington. Miss E. Lock, of Hunterville, has returned to Wanganui College. Mrs H. Rawson, of Hunterville, is visiting her daughter, Mrs S. Brookes, of Pahiatua. Miss E. Nation, who is shortly to be married, was the guost of honour at a “kitchen” dance at Pukeroa, near Hunterville. Mr G, Porter, of tho Marton branch of the Bank of Australasia, who has boen transferred to Wellington, was mot by the pupils of St. Andrew’s Sunday School and presented with a solid leather suitcase. A visitor to Marton is Mr N. J. Bennington, of Lower Hutt, who was a resident of the town 30 years ago. At a special meeting of the Marton Borough Council, Miss A. Fitton was appointed assistant to the town clerk. Mr ,J. Beiliss, of Taihapc, has been appointed manager of the Taihapc branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., Ltd., in succession to Mr Maclean Smith who has been promoted to Palmerston North. Mr J. Evans, of Tai. hape, is visiting Wanganui for the Belmont golf tournament. GENERAL. The sequel to a newspaper controversy between two well-known Marton ministers on the subject of evolution and its relation to Christianity is to take placo in one of the local halls at an early date when a public debate will bo held. Decorations in celebration of the jubilee of the foundation of Marton borough are being erected, the chief means being the provision of coloured lights. The jubilee functions conclude on Saturday, September 28. Several old residents are already in town renewing old acquaintanceships. At the annual meeting of the Taihapc Bowling Club, the following officers were elected: Patron, Mr J. P. Aldridge; president, Mr H. D. Bond; vice-president, Rev. E. C. Bandy; secretary, Mr G. C. Armstrong; treasurer, Mr J. Mortland; auditor, Mr G. L. Dymock; committee, Messrs R. J. Bowie, H. O'Callaghan, D. Ncagle, J. Read and 11. Marsh. The Hunterville Chamber of Commerce has 6ct up a committee consisting of Messrs L. J. Thompson, W. G. Cunningham and W. A. Bowick to deal with the provision of material for the new library and reading loom established by the chamber for the use of the general public. A Government subsidy for the scheme is to be applied for The Marton Firo Brigade was called out shortly after mid-day yesterday to an incipient outbreak of fire at the rear of the White Hart Hotel buildings. Tho flames were speedily quelled and little damage was done. It is believed that the fire was caused by a bucket of live ashes being left on. an upstairs landing. Tho fortnightly meeting of Morgan Lodgo of Druids, Marton, on Thursday night, was one of the largest in the history of that society, the attendance being close on 150. Visitors were present from Wanganui, Aramoho, Taihape, Raetihi, Feeding, Eltham, Dannevirke, Manakau and Rotorua. P.D.P. Bro. E. R. Morgan, of Wanganui, from Whom the lodge takes its name, welcomed the visitors and after the ordinary business had closed dancing and card-playing wore indulged in until an early hour. The engineer reported at Thursday’s meeting of the Wanganui-Rangitikei Power Board that the work of changing over from 6600-volt to 11,000-volt supply in tho Marton area is progressing steadily. Steel poles are being erected in various thoroughfares in tho town, and alterations to certain substations performed. The danger arising from lack of knowledge of electrical appliances was stressed by Mr 11. J D. McManaway, of Bulls, at the Power Board mooting. He suggested that a list of “dont’s” bo issued to every consumer, with an instruction that it be hung in a conspicuous place. A committee was set up to recommend the desired list for consideration at the next meeting. The proceeds of tho St. Stephen’s Church (Marton) flower show this week amounted to £2BO, or £3O bettor than last year’s effort. On both evenings of the function a short play, “From Calais to Dover,” was presented. A magnificent 12-pointer wapiti head, secured by Mr K. W. Dalrymple, of Bulls, in Southland last April, is at present on view in a Marton shop window and is arousing a considerable amount of interest. MARTON, Sept. 22. A special meeting of tho Marton Borough Council was held on Friday evening, the Mayor (Mr Fred Purnell) presiding. The Secretary of the Treasury wrote acknowledging receipt of the sum of £389 8s 6d, donations by the town to the earthquake relief fund. Mr Alan Powell was granted a refund of heavy traffic fee on a lorry used by him and which had been off the road for seven weeks.
The wedding was solemnised at tho Catholic Church, Mangaweka, on September 4, of Rosa, only daughter of Mr L. O’Brien, and Mr Charles Clent. Rev. Father Doolaghty officiated, and Miss W. Wright presided at the organ. Misses Maura O’Dea and Joyce Brown were tho bridesmaids, and Mrs Ryan, of Palmerston North, cousin of tho bride, was matron r-f honour. Mr A. Eng, of Ohingaiti, was best man, and Mr Bartlett, groomsman. Twin sisters, June and Pat Bailey, were flower girls. Tho bride was attired in a French ivory georgette frock, embroidered in silver and crystal. Her soft veil, which fell in folds, formed a train and was embroidered in palest pastel shades. She carried a shower bouquet of freesias and maidenhair fern.
The Taihape Rugby Union held a dance in order to wind up the season’s activities. During an interval, Mr J. Quirk, the union president, presented the trophies won during the season, as follow:—President’s Rose Bowl, Pirates Club; Senior Championship Cup, Pirates Club; JunioD Championship Cup, Utiku Club; Senior Seven-aside Cup, Hautapu Club; Junior Seven-aside Cup, Hautapu Club; Senior One-round Cup, Pirates Club; Junior One-round Cup, Utiku Club; Town and Country Cup, Country team. The president then made eulogistic reference to the'services of Mr A. E. (“Moke”) Beiliss, who played his last match last Wednesday. He spoke in the highest terms of Mr Beiliss who wa6 given a warm hearing on replying. The Rangitikei referees’ team played a curtain-raiser to tho Wairarapa-Wanganui Rugby match, yesterday, with a Wanganui referees’ team, the result being a draw, 8 points each. For the Rangitikei “whistlers,” L. G. Morris soored a try which J. Stewart converted, and J. Stewart also kicked a penalty goal. PERSONAL. Constable S. R. Hercock, of Marton, who has been an inmate of a private hospital, has been discharged and hopes to resume duty at. an early date. The local senior constable! Mr H. J. Thompson, is also indisposed. Air Ralph Chittenden, of the Marton P. and T. staff, who has been ill for some time, is making an excellent recovery.
