OBITUARY.

SIR GEORGE FENWICK. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin announces the death, following a short attack of influenza, of Sir Ueorge Fenwick, K. 8., aged 82 years, managing director of the Otago Daily Times, and one of the best known journalists in New Zealand. Born in Sunderland, England, in 1847, the late Sir George Fenwick migrated with his parents, reaching Dunedin in 1856. Three years later he entered the Otago Witness office as an apprentice. ,In 1866, he left for Australia, but returned, and in 1868 he became part proprietor of a goldfields newspaper. After being manager of the Otago Guardian, he became part proprietor of that journal and with lus partner, Mr Reed, purchased the Otago Daily Times and Otago Witness in 1877. In the following year the business was floated into a company of which the deceased gentleman became managing director. The late Sir George took a keen interest in social and public matters and was connected with a large number of bodies, particularly in the south. He had been a member of the Prisons Board, president of the Otago Art Society, founder in 1882 of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and chairman of the Diocesan Trust Board. In addition, the deceased gentleman was the author of pamphlets on the scenery, flora and fauna of Otago and mountain tours. By his death there has passed one of the widest known newspaper proprietors of the Dominion and one who had a large circle of friends. CHAIRMAN OF PRESS ASSOCIATION. ONE OF ITS FOUNDERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. Sir George Fenwick was one of the founders of the Press Association and was looking forward to celebrating its jubilee, the exact date of which is December 19 of this year. He was chairman at the time of his death and only quite recently had compiled an historical record of the events which led up to the formation of the association with an interesting account of its early stages and subsequent development.
