UMUTOI.

UMUTOI, Sept. 23. On Friday evening last the people of Umutoi and surrounding district gave a dance and “kitchen tea” in. the local schoolroom to Miss Elsie Hemmings whose marriage takes place shortly. A most enjoyable time was spent in dancing and competitions. Competition winners were Mrs Pettigrew and Messrs. C. Foot and J Burton, while a "lucky spot” waltz was won by Miss Signal and Mr J. Burlon. On behalf of those present, Mr S. Hart mado tho presentation, commenting on tho popularity of Miss Hemmings who has resided in the district all her life. He then called on Miss Hemmings who, assisted by Mr C. Foot, proceeded to unwrap the parcels, revealing many useful presents. Mr C. Foot suitably replied on behalf of Miss Hemmings. “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” was then sung, and the dancing resumed, music being supplied by Messrs T. and C. Searle and F. Harvey. A very dainty supper was served and tho evening terminated with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
