PEEPING ANKLES.
CRINOLINES CONDEMNED. MODERN DRESS MODEST. “Old-fashioned crinolines, with ankles and frills peeping underneath, were undoubtedly suggestive. To-day fashions are honest and becoming, and give us freedom,” said the Marchioness of Queensberrry, replying to the indictment of modern dress voiced by Professor Flugel at the International Congress of the World League for Sexual Reform. She added that, if anything, present fashions contributed to modesty rather than to the reverse. Miss Heather Thatcher, the wellknown actress, repudiated Professor Flugel’s suggestion that the attraction exercises by clothes and nakedness wa a the guiding principle in women’s dress. “If a woman has a nice back, whv shouldn’t she show it within reason?” she declared. “A well-dressed woman knows where to draw the line. Clothes to-day are simpler and neater than they have ever been.”
