DOWN THE LINE

(From Our Own Correspondent). OTAKI, Sept. 23.

Molly Kendrick, who has been in hospital for several clays due to severe bites from a dog, which necessitated tho insertion of several stitches, returned to her home yesterday. There was a splendid gathering of Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, together with a number of friends, at the Lyric Theatre on Friday night, when the Boy Scouts celebrated their first birthday. Sir Alfred Robin, who was present by special invitation, was greeted with a huka. Two young men were taken into custody by Constables Satherley and Carran on Saturday night and to-day charged with disorderly conduct. A youth named Young was charged with drunkenness. Laurence Mudgway was charged with acting in a disorderly manner, and Monty Edwards with behaving in a similar manner. None of the young men appeared. Young was fined £l, in default seven days. Mudgway and Edwards, it was stated, acted in a very disorderly manner while a dance was in progress at the Native school, and the former dragged Young into a passage and who was dealing out blows when a by-stander took charge and pulled him into an adjacent room. Mudgway at first denied all knowledge of the affair, but at the station admitted causing the trouble, and was also identified as the prime mover of the affair. Edwards who had been previously ejected from the hall, by Constable Carran and given a friendly warning, returned to tho hall only to get into further trouble by encouraging the “scrap.” Messrs Smith and Nicholson, J.P.’s, inflicted a fino of £2 on Mudgway and ordered him to pay witness’s expenses (10s). Edwards was also fined £2 Default was fixed at 14 days’ imprisonment.

At the Police Court Tamati Harvey appeared before Messrs W. B. Smith and H. Nicholson, J.P’s., charged with being in charge of a motor-car while in an intoxicated condition. Constable Satherley stated that on Saturday night at 6.25 he and Constable Carran saw defendant in tho town having trouble with a motor-car which would first go forward and then backward. They interviewed Harvey and found that he had been drinking. They warned him and advised him to go away, but ho bo came abusive and was finally locked up. Harvey, who pleaded guilty, stated that he was not used to the gears, but the Bench pointed out that this was no excuso for being intoxicated, or for abusing the police who were only doing their duty. They would, however, take a lenient view of the matter as the car was Harvey’s means of livelihood, while it was his first appearance in Court. In view of these circumstances he would be.lot off with a light fine, viz., £3, but he was cautioned that, if ho again came before them on a similar offence, ho would lose his license and perhaps his liberty for a time The default was fixed at 14 days, while a fortnight was given in which to pay the fine.
