WHIPPET RACING
MANAWATU SPRING MEETING. Yesterday’s rain- did not affect, to any extent, the permanent track at tire Sportsground. and the Manawatu Whippet Club was able to stago its spring meeting in the afternoon. The sport provided' was interesting and there were some excellent finishes, one of the best being in the second heat of the big handicap, when Prince Rupert aiid Patsy were on terms ten yards from the post. The former made a great effort and just got in first. Details are as follow, the distance in each race being 170 yards: SPRING HURDLES., of 4} sovs. Mr A.. Oliver’s Kiitie, 22yds 1 Hr W. Shirriffs’s Cayenne, 4yds ... 2 Also started : Mr C. Aitohison’s Gold Dust, 3yds; Mr W. Shirriffs's Laughing Eyes, 12yds: Mr L. Oliver’s Ivatinka, 19yds; Messrs Sutherland and Weir’s Midget, 22yds. Kiltie was never headed, Cayenne with a good finishing run being unable to get closer than a length. Gold Dust was third. Time, 13 l-ssecs. MAIDEN HANDICAP, of 2f sovs. Messrs Sutherland and Weir’s Prince Rupert, 22yds 1 Mr W. Shirriffs’s Patsy, 22yds ... 2 Also started; Mr Montgomery’s Brownette, 21yds; Air M. Robinson’s Rio Rita, 21,vds; Mr J. Watt’s Cay-enne-Tripawaypup, 22yds; Mr A. Wilson’s Miss Australia, 22yds. In a good finish Prince Rupert had a little more pace over the last few yards to gain the decision by a length. Time, 10 3-ssec6. SEPTEMBER HANDICAP, of 8 sovs. First Heat. Mrs E. Barnes’s Glen Rossie, 21yds 1 Mr E. Wimsett’s Tip Toes, 18yds ... 2 Also started: Mrs E. Johansen’s Nannette, 3.vds; Mr W. Shirriffs’s Trixie, 17tds; Mrs S. Meadley’s Elopement, 18yds. Time, 10 l-ssecs. Second Heat. Messrs Sutherland and Weir’s Prince Rupert, 19yds 1 Mr \V. Shirriffs’s Patsy, 22yds. ... 2 Also started: Mr C. Aitchisoii’S Gold Dust, 3yds; Mr L. Oliver’s Kaitinka, 13yds; Mr A. Oliver’s Kiltie, 17yds; Mr Montgomery’s Brownette, 21yds. Time, llsecs. Final. Glen Rossie 1 Tip Toes 2 From an excellent start the dogs were soon racing together. Fifty yards from home Glen Rossie and Tip Toes drew away, a gruelling finisii seeing the former with a half-length advantage. : Prince Rupert was third. Time, 10 3-osecs.
