BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY.
Rev. J. D. McArthur presided at the annual meeting of the Longburn branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society and paid a high tribute to the work of the society, specially stressing the immense value it is to the missionaries. He expressed the desire to support the work in every way possible. He invited the organising secretary to speak. Mrs Porter stated that the work was abounding with encouragement everywhere, as was evidenced by the growth of interest, of recent returns, and in many places of the sympathetic interest of the ministers. The speaker warmly thanked Mr McArthur for his help and support both in Levin and in Palmerston North. She also eulogised the fine work of Mrs Davey, the secretary, through whose tireless energy and devotion it had been possible to carry on the work at Longburn. Afternoon tea dispensed by the ladies brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. A branch was formed at Linton on Monday afternoon at a representative gathering. Mrs Porter gave a world sketch of the work since the foundation of the society, stating that 397,237,795 copies of the Scriptures had been circulated since the inception in 1804. She also expressed the great pleasure it was to meet the Linton people. Mrs Batchelar was elected president and Miss Batchelar secretary and collector. The speaker stressed the point that the object of the meeting was really to make the work known, not to tax the district in obtaining donations. She also very heartily thanked Mrs Batchelar for all the trouble she had taken in gathering .the people together and finding a place of meeting. Mrs Batchelar expressed her pleasure at being able to do so.
