FEILDING

BOXING TOURNEY. (Special to “Standard.”) EEILDING, Sept. 26. Under the auspices of the Feilding Amateur Boxing Club, another very successful tournament was held in the club’s gymnasium last night, an encouraging number of spectators, including a few ladies, being present. An exhibition bout between N. Christenson (sst.) and K. O’Rourke (sst.) proved a draw, both lads mixing thing freely throughout.. H. Mudgway, Feilding (10.7) v. L. Ford, Palmerston North (11.2). —The first round was tame, the opponents sizing up each other at length, but in the second both became aggressive. Mudgway sent homo a left to Ford's face, but the latter bored in and shook the Feilding man with some heavy rights. The final round saw Ford carry the fight to his opponent, sending him on to the ropes with a heavy right. A sportsmanlike stand-off while Mudgway recovered cost Ford the decision the local man having the lead on points and his recovery gave him the referee’s verdict.

A. Price, Feilding (10.10) v. A. Candy, Palmerston North (10.7). —An interesting bout, the contestants being evenly matched. Candy endeavoured to force the issue «in the first round, but Price held him off and in-fighting developed for the next two rounds. The referee frequently tried to separate the boxers, but a somewhat duel bout ended in a draw. R. Coughlan,.Palmerston North (9st) v. A.. Carson, Feilding (9st). —From the first gong Coughlan was the aggressor and subjected his adversary to some telling punishment, although the local man recovered some of the ground in the middle round. Coughlan was amiin the more active in the final round, but the referee favoured the local man’s work and awarded him the decision. , J. Swcetman. Palmerston North (8.12) v. A. McLaughlan, Awapuni (8.3). —The Awapuni man' connected with some heavy rights and lefts at the opening of the fray, but Sweetman punished him also with his telling left. The decision went to the 1 almerston North man finally, McLaughlan. however, showing more pace and vigour than Iris opponent in the final round. T ~ O. Loatham. Palmerston North (11.6) v. L. Pike, Feilding (11.5). Pike took the offensive earjy in the bout and broke through his opponent’s guard to get home to the race but the visitor showed a reversal or tactics in the middle round and punished Pike. The final Lout also saw the local representative wilting under the punishment, bdt at the last he rallied to get ,a very narrow decision. E. limes, Rongotea (7.7'i v. A. Milne, Palmerston North, (Bst).—The Palmerston North boy had the advantage in poundage and the weight ol his attack got through Innes’s guard. Nothing daunted, the country youth came back in the second round and although he. took a lot of punishment in this and the final, the award ing of a draw was popular with tire audience who warmly applauded the gameness of Innes. _ A. Yelverton, Awapuni (9.2) v. U. Homan, Palmerston North, (9st). —Homan carried too many guns for relverton and inflicted severe punishment to the head and face in the first round. The middle round also saw the Awapuni man in trouble, the bell saving him from taking the floor, and in the final go Homan maintained his advantage to get an easy decision. Mr J. G. Eliott, the club’s patron, presented the trophies, to the winners at the conclusion of tin bouts. PIGEON RACING. The opening of the Feilding Pigeon Racing Club’s season was marked by a race from Taumaranui, a distance of 96 miles air line. The winning bird, Mr A. Malcolmson’s pied hen Genney Vee, flew the distance in 2 hours 30 minutes, the velocity being 1124 yards per minute, Mr A. W. Stances b.c., 1123 yards per minute, was second; Mr P. Spooner’s r.c.c., velocity 1106 yards per minute, third ; Mr G. ]\lalcolmson’s hen Le Brique, 1019 yards per minute, fourth. The birds had to battle against a strong head wind all the way. , , „ Next week-end the lace will be flown from Te Kuiti.

FOOTBALL. The annual Rugby football match between the Feilding grocers and dfapers was played Johnston Park yesterday afternoon. The game proved rather patchy and one-sided, the grocers having more regular nlayeis in their ranks than their opponents. The final honours went to the grocers by 21 points to 8. Mr H. Hope refereed. The players were entertained to dinner in the eevning.

KIMBOLTON GOLF CLUB. The bogey and modal competitions of the Kimbolton Golf Club were concluded last week. Both events were won by Hocking, with J. Watt as runner-up. The eclectic match is in a very interesting stage, the following being the leading net scores at date: — Richardson 49, Gray 50, D’Ath 51. Hocking 53, J. Watt 54, G. Watt 57,. The first round of the championship is now being played. The following results are to hand:—Gray beat McKenzie, D’Ath beat W. J. Beard, J. W’att beat Thomson, Everess beat Flannery. , The official closing of the season is to be held on Monday, October 28th (Labour Day).

FIRE BOARDThe report of the superintendent of the Feilding Fire Brigade (Mr O. C. Sporle) was placed before the quarterly meeting of the Feilding Fire Board this afternoon as follows“ The brigade received five calls during the quarter —four chimneys, and a fire at the residence of Mr E. Fair, of Denbigh Street, on August 21st, at 7.20 p.ni. Tlie insurance on this building was £I6OO. and on the contents £400; total £2OOO. The damage to the building was £249, and the contents £39 12s. The value of buildings on which fires occurred was £2500, and the contents £800; total £3300. The fire loss for the quarter was £2BB 12s. The strength of the brigade is 19 men and two officers. There are three men doing station duty. The attendance and discipline are good. Twenty men are entitled to boot, allowance. The station and plant are in good order. I again wish to thank the members of the board for their kind consideration of all matters for the welfare of the brigade.”

BOROUGH COUNCIL. A special meeting of the Feilding Borough Council was held this morning, the Mayor (Cr C. E. Taylor) presiding. Also present were Crs E. Fair, T Collins. A. McCorkindale, J. C. Hill, D. Pryde, J. Corpe and. H. Stewart. . , , The following tenders were accepted: Alteration to abattoirs, £396 10s 6d; conveniences in Manchester Square, £122 10s. Tho Mayor reported that the tenders were about £2O under the

estimate of the borough engineer (Mr T. K. Hay) for tho work. Grazing of Johnston Park. —A tender of £3 6s 8d per month for the grazing of Johnston Park was accepted. The Mayor stated that the conditions of the lease called for the lessee making provision for the fencing off of the pavilion from the stock of which only sheep were to be allowed on the park. Cr Fair said he -would like to see the number of sheep allowed on the park restricted, and lie related an instance which had occurred at the local golf links when an excessive number of sheep had been put on the pasture and the grass eaten down to the soil. Cr Corpe »aid he would rather see the lessee asked to chain harrow tho park grounds at the termination of his lease in order that the grounds would be the sooner fit for use. It was decided to convey the council’s wishes in this direction to the successful tenderer.
