RACING NEWS.

FROM STABLE AND COURSE

(By “Binocular.”)

Racings at Hastings to-morrow

Piuthair won 350 sovs as the result of her success at Avondale.

Sweet Refrain is stated to have run a solid race at Ashburton, she having battled on to the end of a mile in good style.

Although beaten decisively by Chide, the performance of Prickles in the Ashburton Handicap was quite a good one and her victory at the Geraldine meeting yesterday was well deserved.

Kate Kelly, who runs in the intersts of Mr W. T. Hazlett. but who is trained at Riecarton by E. Scoullar, is reported to have been staying on well in the Fairfield Hack Handicap at Ashburton.

Eaglet’s record to date this season is four starts for four wins, her stake winnings amounting to £1370. False Scent again figured in a minor role at Avondale, although the Hunting Song representative fided second berth to Eaglet in the absence of Admiral Drake who had split the pair at Wanganui.

Hoylake is reported to liavo been prominent for seven furlongs in the Ashburton Handicap last Saturday. He is not, however, ready for a hard mile and a quarter and his trainer may encounter difficulty in getting him through a severo cup preparation as there is a fear that his knees will cause trouble.

Desert Song has proved most unlucky in his three-year-old career, for he has started three times and has been i second at each essay. Leader beat him twice at Riecarton, and lie had a similar experience on Saturday when Meprisant got up in the last stride to beat him in the Trial Plate.

The performance of Sea Raid in winning the Fairfield Hack Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday is stated to have been an attractive one. She was not near the front in the early stages, but ran up to the leaders on reaching the straight, after which she always looked a winner.

Possibly the greatest registration of thoroughbreds -made by one owner in Australia or New Zealand, or possibly the world, stands to the credit of Mr “J. Baron” when he registered H4O horses mostly by Air Balloon, March Along'and Wallace Isinglass.

When Mollison galloped home in front of his field in the All-Aged Stakes at Randwick last autumn, “a great miler” was the attractive caption that described his feat. _ However, in the Warwick Stakes, Limerick accounted for Mollison, while at Rosehill last Saturday Winalot also proved victorious over him.

Pangolin, who originally carried the colours of Mr C. T. Keeble, but who is now owned and trained in the south, registered a success in the hurdles at Geraldine yesterday, a branch of the game in which the’ Panmure gelding promises to bo useful.

Paganelli, Tasty, Red Lion and Hiata were brought back from Sydney on Tuesday. Paganelli was the unlucky one of the Auckland-owned contingent and his defeat in the Canterbury Stakes, in which race Amounis gained the verdict by a short head, was particularly searching.

Bv the Manuka, which left Wellington for Melbourne, via South Island ports, there were shipped from Levin the six-year-old gelding Propaganda (Star Stream—Miss Kelly), a three-year-old half-sister by Manchineel to Hioromea, a gelding by Manchineel out of Beloved and a brood mare by Manchineel.

In opening his three-year-old career in dashing style Pink Coat furnished at Ashburton pointed evidence of being ready for tho fray at an early stage of tho season. The son of Hunting Song is engaged in the Great Northern Guineas and Dunedin Guineas. It is quite possible for the chestnut colt to fulfil his engagements in both races, but such would entail something in tho face of a forced march, and it is, therefore, unlikely to bo undertaken.

Ruling King was galloping as well as anything at Ellerslie prior to the Avondale meeting, but a week or two previously developed a cold, which probably left its effects. Ho was a starter in the Avondale Stakes, but failed to show up, but he should do better later on.

Puncliestow.n, a five-year-old halfbrother by Thurnham to Charlatan, showed up well at the National Meeting. He ran a creditable second to Dutch Money at Ashburton on Saturday, this being his third public outing. He is destined for jumping later on, and should make good in that department.

Seasprite, the dam of Seastar and Seatown, lias dropped a filly foal to Limond, and Mr Frederic is very pleased, as the mare has on two successive occasions dropped twin colts which have not survived. The mare has been to Hunting Song this year. The foal is an early one and is a very fine specimen. Seastar, by Day Comet — Seasprite, the half-sister of Seatown. has also been sent to the stud and will be mated with Diacquenod. Water Pistol, a veteran of the turf in South Australia, it is related by an Adelaide writer, had a narrow escape at a very early stage of his career. During a 6tormy night, fearing that Prakrit would foal, the owner of the Aryan mare. Mr L. T. Cowan, visited the paddock, and sure enough there was a new arrival lying near a creek. It was carried into the house, and, with his wife, Mr Cowan nursed the youngster through the night by the side of a fire. He was kept indoors until the elements moderated to enable him to run alongside the mother. The foal rescued from the elements in the spring of 1921 is identical with Water Pistol, who has won many races and who opened his eight-year-old career with a win.

The many friends of the ex-Aus-tralian, Prank Bullock will be pleased to learn that he is having a good deal of success as a trainer in France. In .a cable to R. Lewis, his brother-in-law, recently he stated that he had won 24 races since ho settled at Chantilly. Bullock gained fame as a rider in England and France, and it seems that he is going to continue to be successful as a trainer. He has a big team of horses in work.

In the Flying Stakes at Avondale on the first day Lady Quex showed a splendid burst of speed. She was the peacemaker for most of the journey, and at the distance post it looked as if she would hang .on and capture the stake. However, 'Eaglet camo at her and being the more seasoned performer the daughter of Lord Quex had to strike her colours to the Auckland

filly. Lady Quex was then hotly challenged by Silvermine after Eaglet had headed her, but’ she was not to be deprived of the second dividend and sho held him off. Lady Quex is now climbing in the weights, but sho is very speedy and her owner should not have great difficulty in placing her this season. Certainly she looks an early winner.

London Sporting Life states that the American National Jockey Club proposes to institute an international race at Arlington Park in July, if it can obtain tiro co-operation of the leading sportsmen of Great Britain and the Continent. The proposed race will be modelled on the Ascot Gold Cup, and the added money is suggested as 100,000 dollars. Mr and Mrs Hertz (Reigh Count’s owners) have offered to augment the stake with an additional 100,000 dollars if Inversion is a challenger. Inversion, owned by Mr J. Reid AValker, beat Reigh Count in the Ascot Gold Cuj*, but Mr AValker is not to be tempted by dollars, and has refused to nominate Inversion, stating that the horse will go to the stud, and already the subscription list is large.

There was much dissatisfaction at the start of the Flying Stakes at Avondale on Saturday, in which half a dozen i horses were badly left. The connections of Awarere were plainly disgusted at not even getting a run for their money, for they expected the chestnut to give a good account of himself. This optimism was justified, for on Monday Awiarere displayed 1 a fine turn of speed in the President’s Handicap. He was well clear inside the distance, and looked an easy winner until White Fang flashed on tire scene. However, it was instructive to see Awarere staging a return to form. The stable was doubly unlucky —first, in Awarere being left standing at the peg on Saturday, and on Monday in striking White Tang “galloping mad.”

AT HASTINGS.

The spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club will be held to-morrow when fields of reasonably good dimensions indicate that interesting racing will be forthcoming. Of the baker’s dozen in the Tomoana Hack Hurdles, Tresham and Sunart head the scale of weights, but probably one of the lighter weights in Princess Elizabeth will be in strong demand with some support for ltoyal Elm and Hard Gold, although the A. M. AVright stable has also Fine Acre therein.

There is a good deal of unknown talent in the Trial Stakes which is run over a scurry distance, but Paiko, I’m Alone and Head Sevang will have an advantage on the score of racing experience. The two local representatives, King Acre and. AVinlock, may have some friend©, but the other trio read the better.

On the strength, of liis Wanganui performances The Masher must be respected in the Glenary Hack Handicap—a mile event—although Balloon, Chopin and Curtsey have all proved capable of seeing out a distance in the past. The local candidate, Arrowhead, has still to prove that he can see out a mile, and probably The Masher, Balloon and Chopin will rank higher in the betting market. The Hawke’s Bay Guineas furnishes a bare six runners, for although the name Hallowvonia was telegraphed as an acceptor, this presumably refers to the Chief Ruler —Hallowvonia three-year-old King Hal, who will not be present. Awapuni will he represented by Roundelay, and the big striding Limond gelding should make a creditable showing, although Hunting Cry and My Own may be difficult to dispose of. On Wanganui form, the veteran Kick Off will probably bo installed favourite for the Spring Handicap in which the old fellow is asked to give Blimp 81bs. Track conditions will make or mar the latter’s prospects, but no doubt the topweight pair will dominate the betting, although High Court may prove dangerous. Siniba, the winner of the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, has an excellent opportunity to repeat the performance at Hastings in the Nursery Handicap, although track reports indicate that Chrysology is above the ordinary. Sea Scout and Princess Betty are two local youngsters who have shown promise. Figuring in the Flaxmere Hack Handicap are such useful • sorts as Bernera, Last Mark Repay, Cuticle, Sylvan Dell and Paiko, the last named, however, claiming an earlier engagement. When the totalisator closes Bernera and Sylvan Dell may be found strongest in favour. The programme will conclude with the Flying Handicap in which Toxeuma will be making a reappearance, while Arrow Lad, Great Charter, Goshawk and Moa Bird will be fresh horses who might be in need of a race. One of the lighter weights in Royal Lineage should play a part in the decision, while Great Charter and Merry Mint may have advanced in their preparations sufficiently to merit support.

AUCKLAND TRAINING NOTES

Per Press Association

AUCKLAND, Sept. 26. Welkne, whose injuries necessitated his destruction yesterday, was a rather unreliable performer, but was capable if in the humour. The weather was fine for training operations this morning, but the work was rather uninteresting. King Emerald was going better than Gold Money over five furlongs in lmin. 4 l-ssec.

Kaiwarra beat War Officer over five furlongs in lmin. 5 2-ssec. Eager Rose went freely over six furlongs in lmin. 21 3-ssec. Corinax 'was too good for Restaurant over seven furlongs in lmin. 31 3-ssec. He is not yet ready, but is coming on. Spring Song beat Thais and Speaklent over four furlongs in 52 4-ssec.

Some Lady sprinted half a mile in 51 4-ssec., and did it well. Good Boy was also pleasing over the same distance in 50 3-ssec.

Sir Archie jumped four hurdles. He hit the first hard, but cleared the other three in fine style.

Marita, Karamu and Adjuster started over the big fences on the flat. Marita gave a good display, but the other pair baulked repeatedly. Calithe, Rayonnant, Lady Spalpeen, Sea Comet, Tinwhistle and Odin were sent over the hill, and all got round safely. Lady Spalpeen and Calithe, both making their first attempt, gave particularly pleasing displays. Tinwhistle. who wacks the condition of the other pair, also fenced splendidly, but he was tiring at the end and hit the last two hard.

AUSTRALIAN RACING
