HIGH SCHOOL ROAD RACE.

D. FRASER THE WINNER. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TO ALBION. Excellcmt conditions prevailed for the annual road race contested by the High School pupils yesterday afternoon, the sun being masked while there was an entire absence of wind. Some 350 scholars took their places on the mark fronting tire school shortly after 3.15 o’clock to strive for individual and club honours. The route mas along Featherston Street to Heretaunga Street, thence to Boundary Road and return to College House via North Street, the distance being estimated at between two and two and a half miles. When the signal was given there was naturally a crowding for places and some of the smaller competitors suffered in the jostlingj one or two being knocked over, but they regained their feet and, amidst a mass of flashing legs, gradually receded into the distance. Ranford was the early leader, but when they turned into North Street, 10 minutes 35 seconds after being sent away on their mission, Fraser had assumed charge and over the last quarter of a mile he steadily drew clear to win by 25 yards in the good time of 13.6 1-5 sec. Although it was 10 l-ssccs slower than the record- time returned by Fletcher two years ago—that athlete incidentally proving to be the winner the following year—the time compared very favourably with that in other years. Ranford hung on to take second place, his time being 13.17 2-5. Then followed Dueker (13.21 4-ssec), Calvert (13.40 l-ssec) with Moxon (13.50 l-ssec) and Moore next, inches only separating the last-named pair. THE FIRST FIFTY.
