FIRE AT LYTTELTON.
MAN AND WIFE HAVE NARROW ESCAPE.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 26. . When, a large wooden shop, with dwelling attached, was almost destroyed by fire at Lyttelton early this morning, the tenant, C. Cording, and his wire were awakened by the smoke, which was suffocating . them. With difficulty they gained an exit through a window in the upper storey leading on to a corrugated iron verandah, and then slid down' the verandah posts. They lost a good deal of furniture. The brigade had a hard fight to prevent the flames from spreading to other buildings.
