BOWLING NOTES
(By “Trundleri”)
The Manson and Barr Cup changed hands on Saturday whfcn a Foxton rink wrested it from the Northern Club which had defended it successfully since the season commenced. Foxton Club does not win many of the major trophies competed for, so that its success was received with considerable pleasure. The game was exceedingly close and victory just went to the winning team. The Oroua rink skipped by E. Mason retains a fairly firm grip upon the Dixon Cup and Tucker Badges. Dannevirke were their victims on Saturday last, being heavily defeated. Pahiatua Club will furnish the next rink to try and take the cup from Oroua. Interesting games were played by Northern and Palmerston North for the Fletcher Shield. There was some tall scoring and the fact that three of the latter club’s rinks won their games by wide margins gave success to the holders. Local greens are suffering from the recent drought conditions and a steady downpour would be much appreciated by. the greenkeepers.Unlike other sports, bowls do not seem to enlarge the vocabulary (says an exchange) although it. is on record that John Aylmer (1521-1594), though Bishop of London,. enjoyed a game on Sunday afternoon, ’and used such language “as justly exposed his character to reproach.” The game appears to have been elevated to a higher plane since then, however. “Akarara” writes to the Auckland Star: In view of the fine win by Professor Maxwell Walker’s team in the Dominion champion rink, might it not bh advisable that the bowling public should consider sending him with a team to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles this year? His supremacy as a bowler is admitted, and he has been an ornament to the game. It would be a good opportunity to put New Zealand on the map of the bowling world. A necessary proviso is that the team must he selected by the Auckland or New Zealand centre.
THE DOMINION TOURNAMENT. After many attempts M. Wslker, of Auckland, was at last successful in the blue riband event of New Zealand bowlers when he won the champion rinks contest at Christchurch last week. He has now been successful in all three competitions. He won the singles in 1915. 1919 and 1923 and the pairs with A. Brackebush in 1927. At one stage last Friday, when Deare (Dunedin) last year’s winner, heavilv defeated lrim in the first of the final matches for the rinks, it appeared that his chances were rather weak, but in the afternoon his team played much better and success went his way. Had Deare won he would have established a record by winning the event two years in succession.
