Campbell, of Tipapakuku (Dannevirke) reporting the gallant action of Mr W. H. Nairn, of Porongahau, who had saved the life of Mr Campbell’s daughter at Porongahau beach on January 10. Recounting the details of the incident, Mr Campbell explained that Miss Davidson, of Palmerston North, and his daughter Thelma were bathing when they got into difficulties. Their plight, was not observed for some minutes by whicn time Miss Campbell- had disappeared. She wore a red bathing cap, however, and it was by this that she was located. She was eventually . brought to the shore in an unconscious condition ana artificial respiration had to be applied before she recovered. ; Mr Campbell expressed his conviction that a tragedy would have occurred but for the prompt action ot Mr Naim who had to swim well out to effect a rescue and when returning with the unconscious girl had to cross a deep channel and to contend with a strong under current. Fortunately, a life line was available and this was utilised to get Mr Nairn and Ins burden ashore. Mr Campbell considered Mr Nairn’s action well worthy of further recognition and for this, reason had reported the matter to the society. The chairman pointed out that the matter was one for the Royal Humane Society and it was resolved to forward the. letter to the society’s local representative, also to forward an .expression of appreciation to Mr Nairn.
