PAHIATUA RACES
ARAJEAN WINS THE CUP
SOUCHONG’S GREAT SPEED
Small fields and a f comparatively small attendance- o£ * patrons made for apathetic racing at Paliiatua yesterday, wnen the opening day of the annual meeting was held. Arajean, who had run second in the Ashhurst Cup, improved s i further to win the principal event from another promote hack in Jayson, with The Swell third. In the Presidents Handicap Souchong displayed a great turn of speed to wm very comfortably from Dainty Ways and Acora, the bnllian of the winner over the early portion being a deciding motor. With four one-dividend races it was not surprising o find the totalisator returns decline substantially, the sum oi £4657 10s being handled as compared with £7422 10s tor the opening day last year—a decrease of £2765.
TWO INQUIRIES.
Game on terms. Three furlongs from home Royal Game ran up to tho leaders, but Wiggins, on tho favourito, gave tho maro her head and sho strodo away to open up a gap. In the run homo Arajean had no difficulty to retain her advantage, winning by two lengths from Jayson, who finishod well to beat The Swell by a similar margin. Royal Gamp and Rory Mor wore together. The ’Swell showed an improvement on his Ashhurst performance, but had no chance with tho winner. WENT UNKINDLY. Manawatu was an odds-on favourite for the Hamua Hack Handicap, but the Acre gelding did not appear to appreciate the state •of the going and whilo he finished strongly enough his felLqw Awapuni-trained performer, Thrasher, had a half length advantage at the post. Spearopa acted os pacemaker from Thrasher and Manawatu and it was not till approaching the entrance that the latter pair ran up to Spearopa. However, Manawatu again dropped back whereas Thrasher ran to tho _ front,, and although Manawatu made a bid to get up in tho straight he failed to do eo by half a length. Spearopa was a length back. WINS COMFORTABLY. Gold Sand, favourite in a four-horse race, won the Makuri Hack Handicap quite comfortably after boing in the van throughout. Although Leyland promised to be troublesome the etarter got the quartette away well, Gold Sand and Patearoa going to the front. Leyland ran up crossing the top, but failed to hold his position, Gold Sand I straightening out for home ahead of PateaI roa. The favourite finished full of running to win by a length and a half from Patcaroa with Baskier three longths back. On returning to weigh in it was found that K. Voitre, the rider of Patearoa, was 3ilbs overweight and Baskier was promoted to second berth with Leyland third. GREAT BURST OF SPEED. Souchong, favourite for the President’s Handicap, quiokly opened up a break from False Scent and Acora, the field stringing out early. Crossing thq top Acpra set out in pursuit of Souchong, but the leador turned for home well clear and strode on to win comfortably by two longths from Dainty Ways, who finished very strongly after being well back three furlongs from home to beat Acora homo by a couple of lengths. Statuary, who had been slow to find his feet, likewise came from well back to head off False Scent on the post for. fourth place. Souchong’s early speed had the field struggling within a furlong. A WEST COAST HORSE. Green Patch was made favourite for the Eketahuria' Hack Handicap-Mhe final event of the day—but the New Plymouth candidate was badly placed at the turn for home and could not do better than finish fourth; the winner proving to be Earthquake who, like-Gold Sand, came from the West Coast. Lady Ronald led Acrospire and Derry Belle into the back straight, Earthquake lying in behind on the rails. As they turned to come across tho top Earthquake got through on the inside to have the race won at the top of the straight.. _ Derry Belle was being hard ridden at the distance, but the topweight could make no impression and Lady Ronald held her off in the run to the post to attend Earthquake, home, the West Coaster, however, having a three lengths margin. Derry Belle was half a length away, with Green Patch, who put in a late run, fourth. THE DETAILED RUNNERS. MAIDEN RACE, of 55 sovs; second horse 6 sovs. and third 3 sovs. Six furlongs and 55 yards. RIDER’S WEIGHT IN'- ERROR.
During tho course of tbo day an inquiry was held into alleged interference with Manawatu by" Trashor- at the top of the straight during tho running of the Hamua Hack Handicap, but after Hewing evidence the judicial committee decided that no action should be taken, the incident having been accidental. K-, Voitro, the rider of Thrasher, was again before the stewards later as the result qf ■ weighing in 3jrlbs overweight ■ after riding Patearoa in tho ‘ succeeding ovont. Tho jockey ha-a been detained ever tho earlier inquiry and it was considered .that in the hurry of •weighing out an error was made, but there , was no,, evidence to,, show how tho mistake was made* However, uAder'tne rules of racing, Patearoa had perforce to bo disqualified for the rabo, Baskier. being placed second and Leyland third. A. QHIEF CLERK WINS. ■ • V Populace was a slightly better favourite than Morrath for tho Maiden Race, but the disappointing Chief Clerk showed improved form to stay on just woll enough to beat Morrath. Kalmuk ran to tho front from Chiof Clerk, Foulwind, Chief Marionette and Morrath immediately upon the tapes being released, but both Morrath and Populace improved their position crossing the top. Morrath was at Kalmuk’s quarters as thoy turnod into tho straight, with Chief Marionette, Populace and Chief Clerk handy. At the distance Kalmuk promised to bo tho winner, but over tho last few yards Chiof Clerk and Morrath wore him down, the former winning by a head from Morrath Jwith Kalmuk another head back. Decree Nisi, after being well back in the early stages and carrying the tapes with her the whole journey, finished strongly in fourth place. OUTSIDER SCORES. Mahora, who was making his first appearance in public for somo time, was installed favourito for the .Ballance Highweight from Blacksmith, but while tho topwfcight ran creditably a surprise was m store when Royal Songster won practically from start to finish.' It was, nevertheless, a false price for tho winner to pay. An excellent start saw Royal Songster, Mahora, Blacksmith and Freehold on terms as they raced to tho turn, but Blacksmith droped back, Royal Songstor and Mjtnora taking up the running from Freehold ana Shootist. They turned for home in. the same order and in the 1 . run down - the straight Royal Songster held off Mahora to win by a length with Freehold a head back. Blacksmith made an effort to get up, but failed finishing fourth. A POOR RACE. Only three candidates paradod for tho Konini Hack Handipap and Arvado- was a,, firm favourite from False Soenfc although the chestnut mare was paying quito a satisfactory price. Arvada, who was under a hard pull, led False Scent and Golden Shadow along • tho back and across • tho t<£> Into the straight, the only surpriso in tho run homo being that Golden Shadow finished strongly enough to boat False Scent home by a neck. Arvada was never in danger of defeat and won nicely by a length. ARAJEAN’S FIRST CUP.
With Clqny, Chief Cook and Pahu absentees from tho Pahiatua Cup contest only six horses paradod for the principal event, and Arajean, who had made a very promising dobut in big company at AshfiuTst, wa3 installed favourite from The Swell and Jayson. Arajean jumped away smartly to assume charge from Royal Game ai)d Rory Mor as thoy wont through the straight. The pace was slow ovor the first portion, Arajean being held back to Rory Mor, with Jayson and Royal
