GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS.
ALLOWANCES TO COMMITTEES
ALTERATION SUGGESTED.
An alteration in the system of the payment of : school committees’ allowances was! suggested to the Wanganui Education Board yesterday in a letter from the Education Department. It was proposed that under the new' system the grants should be made on the basis; of floor space—seven-, pence per foot of occupied space, and twopence per . foot of unoccupied floor space, with Grade 0 schools to receive no/allowance; Board members agreed that the committees would have difficulty in carrying on, owing to the reduction, in (the grant. *• • J In reply to questions, the secretary said that tile large schools would gain, and tie smaller schools would lose. Palmerston North Central would gain £44, Terrace End £49, Foxton (three buildings) £6O, ’ Hunterville £46, Lytton Street (Feilding) £3O.- Mount View would lose £lO, Russell Street £ll, and Cheltenham £7 a year. Under existing conditions the committee would be paid £7855 for .1932 and under the new scheme £7259, thus reducing the amount by £696, said the secretary. ■v Mr J. K. Hornblow: At the expense of the country schools. Mr Tingey: That system would be quite inequitable, and it would prevent the Grade 0 schools from having an -allowance. -. ’ • The board decided to write to ' the department, pointing out that the system in operation was considered the more satisfactory in its district, arid also suggesting that it should remain .in fjjrce. ; /
