TEACHERS’ SALARIES
INCREMENTS BEING WITHHELD.
WANGANUI BOARD'S ATTITUDE.
Annual increments in teacher*’ salaries are to be withheld for the present, according to a notification received by the Wanganui Education Board at yesterday’s meeting from the Education Department. The opinion was expressed by Mr J. Aitken that.it was penalising the lowerpaid teachers who had not reached their top figure. Those who had still increments to come would be penalised. The others would not suffer. He thought tnat they should object on the grounds that the saving would not fall equitably. He moved t-at the department should be asked to pay the increments at a later date. The chairman pointed, out that the letter stated that the increments would be withheld and not cancelled. “We take it that they will be paid with interest added," observed another member. Mr W. Adams commented that those on top would receive no hardship. “They are the lucky ones,” stated Mr M. H. Oram. “Someone! is generally lucky in life. I move that the letter be received. . r The motion was withdrawn and ■ the amendment proposed in its place. It was seconded.
Mr J. K. Horn blow said ■ that the Education Boards, or, through them, - the Government, had entered into a. contract to pay the teachers so much per year at such an increase. To withhold that increment would be breaking the contract! The motion was put to the meeting and lost on the casting vote of the chairman. .(.‘i. The letter was received. ■ ,
