UNDER THE ICE.

SIR HUBERT WILKINS’ PLANS. SPECIAL TYPE OF SUBMARINE. Received January 28, 11.10 a.m. VICTORIA (8.C.), Jan. 27. Sir Hubert Wilkins, the famous Australian explorer, said to-day: “I may take a holiday over the Antarctic in the fall. I am also considering another, submarine expedition under the North Polar ice in the following summer. For the next under the ice expedition I have in mind the building of a special type of submarine, hydraulically propelled.” . Sir Hubert stated that he did not know. where the submarine would be built. Compressed air would be - used for propulsion in place of batteries. The craft would not be designed for quick dives. It would have plenty of power, but would be geared for slow speed. The estimated- cost of the vessel would be 200,000 dollars.
