(From Our Own Correspondent.) , , - SHANNON, Jah. 27. The ordinary meeting of tne Borough Council' was held on Tuesday ovoning. Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Councillors Hyde, Thwaitos, J. Curran, junr., Anderson, Radford and J. Curran, sonr. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Clayton and Hook. Mr E. W. Thompson, Mangawhata, - lodged a com-, plaint regarding two bulk impounded on tho 19th Inst. It was pointed out that the cattle on being roleasod from the saleyards escaped from custody and before the drovor could locate them thoy woro impounded. Obviously if this wore tho usual custom it would not bo possible for a drover to work as such a thing might hapen at every crossroad in the country,. -Mr Thompson maintained that the action of tho ranger was harsh and unfair even if tho cattle were legally straying, and asked that the money paid to the poundkeoper bo ■ refundod. It was resolved to reply that tho bulls were oh the road for approximately three hours and tho ranger carried out his duties in impounding them. The general manager of the Now Zealand Railways wrote regarding the Vance Street levol crossing, that the question of* storing wagons in a position other than the siding between tho stockyards and Vance Street had not been overlooked and in this connection the staff at Shannon had instructions to keep the siding as clear of wagons as circumstances would permit. _ Stock wagons wore now placed in tho siding when-actually required for loading and unloading and if- motorists observed the requirements of the law when negotiating tho crossing, which is now equipped with “compulsory stop” signs 'on both sidos of the- line, there should be very little, if any, risk of accident. Mr A. T. Third asked to bo provided with a bettor outlet by deoponing tho existing drain to a depth ,of at least two feet.— 'Roforfod to the road oommittoe. Tho town clerk' roportod that under tho Unemployment Board’s schomo 71 men woro placed for the wook ending tho 16th inst. and 75 men for the .wook onding the 23rd inst. It was resolved to proceed‘ with tho work of topdressing portion of Plimmer Terrace and Ballanco Street main highways. On the suggestion of Cr. Hydo it was resolved to ask tho Post and Telegraph Department to remove the post otnee clock to the front window of the post office. The council resolved to add t!fo 10 per cent, penalty to unpaid rates near tho end of March. The secretary of tho Municipal Association advised that tho executive committee had reluctantly decided that in viow of the present economic position tho conference originally fixed to tako place during the first wook In March, 1932, should not bo held till next year,
