Per Press Association. , AUCKLAND, Jan. 28, The feature of this morning’s play in the New Zealand tennis championships was 1 the defeat-of the national singles- champion, Steadman (Auckland) by the Canterbury colt, Barnett, who last week attracted much attention, by his successive victories in the Wilding Shield matches. Barnett won decisively, 6—l, 6—-4, .6—1.. The New Zealand woman champion, Mrs Dykes (Auckland) was also heavily beaten by Miss N. Hall; of the visiting New South Wales team. The score, was 6—4, 6—-0, The only New Zealander left this morning in the singles was/Miss Nicholls (Wellington) who still had to meet Miss Hartigan (N.S.W.) for tho right-to enter the semi-final. . _ •

. Stedman was decisively beaten by Barnett.
