PAHIATUA MEETING.

CHIEF HANDICAP TO JAYSON. SOUCHONG WINS AGAIN. For the conclusion of the Pahiatua Racing Club’s meeting yesterday there was fine weather and- a. fair attendance. The totalisator handled £4302 during, the day, as against £7536 10s for the qorrosponding day last year and the total for the meeting was £8059 10s, as' compared with £14,959 last year, the decrease being £5999 10s. Following a bad start in the Tane Hack Handicap, the apprentice rider, W. J. McDowell, who had the mount on Populace, was fined £2. The stewards found that through irritating his horse, after being warned, by the start steward, McDowell had caused it to bump Golden Shadow as the tapes wore roleased, with the result that Golden Shadow and Populace were hopelessly left. V. After the Rodney Hack Handicap, there was an inquiry into interference by Acrospire, whose rider, M. Gilmore, explained that his horse veered away from the whip. No action was taken.

Backed to a short price, Morrath just failed to win the Trial Plato. Sho took chargo early in the race, but three furlongs from home Sir Spear ran up to her, and in the finish outstayed hor to win by a head. Kalmuk was a length and a. half away third, followed by Chief Marionotto and Foulwind. The winner paid a good dividend.

The first day’s winner, Royal Songster, was mado favourite for the Pongaroa Highweight Handioap, and after running a gOod race he was defeatod by Blacksmith. Royal Songster, Rory Mor and Blacksmith were the leaders soon aftor turning for home, Blacksmith finishing solidly to win by half a length. Rory Mor dropped out in the last furlong, and Mahora finished third, a length behind Royal Songster, and a head in front of Royal Opera. Next were Rory Mor and Freehold, with Autumn 'awn beaten off. In the Tane Handicap, for which five horses competod, Golden Shadow and Populace lost ail chance at the outset. Dorry Bello went on ahead of the other two, and won easily by four lengths Irom Chief Clerk, who beat Spearopa by three lengths. Jayson won the principal event of the day, the Mangahao Handicap, in a close finish with Chopin, who is coming back to form. The Swell took chargo as soon, as tho j fiold wo3 released, and lod ii)to the back stretch from ltory. Mol', Arajean, and Chopin, with Jayson a bad last. The Swell was still in front turning for home, with Arajean and Rory Mor handy, and Chopin, Statuary, and Royal Gamo next, with Javson still last, but closing on the bunoh. The Swell was in trouble a furlong from home, and Arajean took chargo but could not go on, and Chopin and Jayson came through and fought out the finishing, Jayson winning by a head. Arajean was third 1 four lengths away, and Statuary, Rory Mor, Dainty Ways, The Swell and Royal Game following. The winner finished in great style, and wa3 splendidly handled by K. Voitre. ... A rise in weight did not prevent Arvada from winning the Tararua Hack Handicap os easily as she h°d won her race on the opening day. She was always in front and won by two lengths from Baskier, who ; beat Foulwind by a neck. False Scent lay second in the straight, but faded out and finished fourth. Leyland was a bad last. Pateoroa atoned for hia first day s failure by winning the Rodney Hack Handicap. Manawatu, Earthquako, Thrasher and Patearoa led to the straight,, and stayed on well enough to fill the loading plaoes. Patearoa winning by nearly a length. T hrashor beat Acrospire by a head, with Manawatu another head away fourth. Manawatu was unlucky. He dropped bsck to lost three furlongs from home, and in tho straight was finishing well, but could not get through. Souchong went out with a great burst of speed in tho Electric Handicap, and was six lengths clear nearing the straight, where Dainty Ways was last. Dainty Waysheaded him half a furlong from home, butunder pressure Souchong came again, and won by a neck. Acora was four lengths away third, and the only other starter was False Scent. Backers of Souchong got a thrill but the favourite was too strong., Gold Sand was a good favourito in the ; Farewell Hack Handicap, but was never dangerous, nor was the second favourite, Green Patch, who was tailing the field when the race was half over Earthquake led into tho straight, and looked like winning, but Lady Ronald wore her down, and in the finish Derry Belle out her out of second place. Lady Ronald won by two lengths, while Derry Belle beat Earthquake by a neck. Gold Sand and Green Patch, both of whom should do better, were next. -j Detailed rosults aro:— TRIAL PJiATE, of 55 sovs. 'Six furlongs and 55 yards. 5 Sir Spear, 8.0 (Wilson) ... 1 1 Morrath, 8.0 . 2 Kalmuk, 8.0 ••• a Also started: 6 Foulwind, 3 Populace, 8 Park Acre, 7 Chocksay, 4 Chief Marionette 8.0. , • Hoad; length.
