THE UNEMPLOYED.
PROSPECTS FOR WINTER. MR COATES’S OPTIMISM. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. "Before the winter I hope the people in . New Zealand will see quite a remarkable change in the way in which the Government is going to deal with the Unemployment problem,” said Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister in Charge of Unemployment, speaking at the Helensville Show to-d'ay. “Possibly before long 10,000 &ouls at present in cities will move to country districts, where the whole of their efforts will be devoted to increasing production. “There may perhaps be 70,000 registered unemployed before the winter is over and 250,000 in resultant difficulties,” added Mr Coates. “It is not the Government’s job to keep them, but to make the road open for them' : to help themselves. People must realise that it is only thrift, perseverance and intelligence that will see us through.” Mr Coates also made reference to the increased interest in gold production and the increased numbers of prospectors carrying on operations. Within the last three months 300 men had gone prospecting, and another 1000 were ready to move out to ihe auriferous districts. It was possible that in twelve months there might he 5000 men earning their living by the search for gold.
