LINER IN GALE.
DAMAGE CAUSED BY HEAVY SEAS. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 29. On the second night out from Suva the liner Sonoma, which arrived to-day,: shipped some particularly heavy seas, which did considerable damage bn the foredeck and smashed the forward rail of the promenade deck flat. “Some cabins were flooded and, generally speaking, tilings were in a bit of a mess,” said one of the officers on the arrival of the vessel, two hours late, to-day.
Two heavy seas appeared to have done'most of the damage, a solid green wall ’of water reaching as high as the navigating bridge. Tons, of water rushed along .the decks, carrying fittings away and sinnshing several windows on the starboard side of the main deckhouse. The usual speed of the Sonoma is some 350 miles a day, but on one day, early in 'the gale, this was reduced to 241 miles., • '
Passengers on the Sonoma said that the seas which did most of the damage came aboard just on 8 p.m. . Those occupying deck, chairs on the promenade deck were scattered and soon went below. No passenger was allowed on deck: again that evening.
