Per 1 Press Association.
WELLINGTON, Feb. 1
A meeting held at Lower Hutt this morning by a section of workers, op-* posed .to- a. strike" was attended by about 160, but owing to the continuous uproar it was impossible to say what was the feeling of —the : majority. Numerous motions-were proposed, but they were either not put to the meeting or it was impossible to say what the voting was, only a portion of those present voting. At stages the meeting was being addressed by as many as four persons simultaneously. It. appeared, liowever, that many were dissatisfied with the Strike methods and •were anxious to resume work.
The Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr Strand, addressed some of the strikers in the street, saying- that they could resume Work to-morrow morning if they wished and that he was to-dav interviewing the authorities in Wellington with a view of getting something more in the way of wages for relief works on which the men had been engaged. He said that the Eastbourne job had been made a relief work by order of the Unemployment Board. ... r - v .
A strike ballot taken on three jobsin the city showed 280 against a strike and 21 for a strike. Two other jobs were visited by would-be pickets this morning, but the men definitely refused to strike, and as there was strong police protection the strikers departed. . ’ -• >
