RACING NEWS.
FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”)
The threo-year-old Niggerhead has been sold to Mr-A. Foster, of Oamaru, and the gelding will in future bo trained by S. Tlarr.at Riccarton.
Northern reports indicate that Brazanna has only to go on the right way to land a stake before long, as she is sprinting well on the track.
Bell Topper is reported to have settled down considerably as a result of his being worked in blinkers. He has not lived up to early promise. The blunting Song—Cymene colt, which was passed in at the Trcntham salo, has been leased from, Mr.A. B. Williams by J. H. Jefferd, the Hawke’s Bay mentor. It is reported that Chief Cook met with an injury on his homeward journey from Trentham and this inmate of Mrs A. McDonald’s stable at Awapuni may now require a rest.
Gold Day has rejoined tho Te Aroha track workers. Ho may not, however, be at his beet for some weeks, but may have to be reckoned with at the principal country meetings of tho circuit. The Southland trainer, F. J. McKay, has again taken up Mr W. T. Hazlett’s three jumpers, Paris, Apache and Taramoa. who are brothers, and it is likely that they will open the season at the Otautau meeting in March. As the result of his work on the Te Aroha tracks, Master Lu, of steeplechase fame, is reported to be fining down somewhat. His stable companion, Silvertown, by Archiestown, i 3 also stated to bo moulding into shape. 1 The latest addition to the ranks of professional trainers in England is Sir Henry J. Lawson. Ho has owned horses for many years, and is said to bo one of tho moot popular men in Yorkshire. The champion sprinter in Queensland is Hourly, who won recently with 9.11 in 1.121. Hourly was got by Rivoli from Regular Hours, by Haut Brion from Regulator, by Havoc. Rivoli was got by Repartee, a son of Melton.
It is quite likely that the Hastings mentor, J. M. Cameron will take several horses to Sydney for the autumn meetings. If the trip eventuates Noa Lap. Goshawk, Lotus Lily, Hunting Cry and probably Gold Trail may bo included. When tho New Zealand-bred Waterline went amise in Melbourne in the spring it was thought that his racing days might have ended, but he is in work again on the private track of his owner, "Mr S. A. Rawdon,” and may oompoto in tho King's Cup contest at Hobart on February 3. Some little time ago it was stated that there was a possibility that Prince Pombal would bo sent, to Australia to race. “Watcher” comments that as the? Pombal colt ran a great race on tho second day of tho Trentham fixture it is practically certain that tho trip will eventuate. Ono of his engagements across the Tasman is tho A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Tho now win and place totalisator pool originated by Mr S. J. Pullman, secretary of tho Port Adelaide Racing Club, proved much more satisfactory at tho Christmas meeting than when first tried. The system was altered for the Christmas meeting so that straight-out backers of the winner would receive onoi half greater dividend than investors on the winner for a place. Orwel, the name chosen for the champion English two-year-old colt by Gainsborough from Gold Hair, is not inappropriate. Or is, of course,- French for gold, while -it was on the hanks of the Orwell that Gainsborough used often to sketch and paint. A defect in the naming of the colt is, however, that Orwell has twice been bestowed on horses in .England previously, though many years ago. The Paris correspondent of a London paper states that in November the Marseilles Racing Society recovered from the municipality and the State nearly £2OOO in an action which they brought before the courts for damage caused through tho excesses of the mob tho previous year,' when there was a riot on the racecourse. Damage to the extent of over £BOOO was done, and tho court held that the forco of polico was inadequate to cope with the crowd on hand. On the whole Mr R. J. Murphy has been fortunate since his entry into racing, but Gesture and Oratorian have not realised expectations, and their latest form is not highly encouraging, writes “Watcher,” Gesture rain fair races among
the sprinters at Trentham recently, but not what was expected of ono who was tho crack two-year-old when Mr Murphy acquired her. ■ Oratorian was bought at.the record price (2400 guineas) at the national yearling sales, but is still a hack, and failed badly in that grade on Saturday. Whilo tho South Island horses havo been so busy collecting all the big handicap events this season, the North Islanders havo had a rare innings in the classic events. Bronzo Eagle has won both Derbies, Golden Wings won tho Great Northern Guineas, Lack tho Wellesley and Welcome Stakes, Inflation tho Foal Stakes, Rippling Waters tho A-R.C. Welcome, To Waipu tho Avondale Stakes, Tea Trader the Royal Stakes, and Head Lady the Wellington Stakes. The South Island has only secured tho Wan-
ganui Guineas with Croupier and the Dunodin Guineas with Cricket Bat. but in tho latter event there were no North Island competitors. Since winning at Thames Royal Gallant has made marked improvement and is how putting on condition much better than ever ho has previously done, states the Auckland Star. He was responsible for a smart gallop over half a mile on tho No. 2 gross track on a recent morning at Ellerslio, and it'would not surprise to see him winning again before the season is much further advanced. The progency of Waterwings have brought in a lot of money for G. M. Currie. Agrion, by Limond, was purchased by Mr G. O. Greenwood for 875gns., while his full sister, White Wings, cost Mr W. Scholium 725 gns. Another filly was purchased by Mr H. Duff, of Sydney, for 420gns., while Mr V. Riddiford paid 2400gns for a colt by Limond, which equals tho record price paid for a yearling in New Zealand. He was named Zetes, but so far has not racod. In 1930 a Pombal — Waterwings colt cost Mr A. Louisson, of Christchurch, 600gns, and he races under the name of Water Polo. Last year Mr G. D. Greenwood paid- 600gns for a colt by Limond, and recently Mr E. J. Watt, of Sydney, went to 650gns for a colt by the same sire. TAKAPUNA MEETING. - ANTIQUE SCORES AGAIN. . PLATE TO CHIEF JEWEL.
