FARMING NEWS.
RURAL RAKINGS. Shearing operations are well advanced in the Woodville district. A shearer who can still touch the 200 sheep a day mark, stated that the wool ho has shorn this year is exceptionally good. The sheep are, ho said nearly all fat and the extra weight made shearing a lot harder. The discovery of a cattle tick was made on a dairy farm at Puha, East Coast, during last week. This is the first tick to bo reported this season, whereas last season at least two had been found up to the corresponding date (says the Poverty Bay Herald). Reports of cattle tick discoveries in the Gisborne district do not suggest a sorious position. Vagrant ticks have been found on fiat-country farms during the past fesv years, but there is no suggestion of a further spread. In fact, thoro pas been no recurrence on Gisborne properties on w'hich ticks wore reported previously. Inspections of rye grass seed areas that have boon entered under the Agricultural Department's scheme of certification on the East Coast are proceeding rapidly. It was reported by Mr M. A. Black the officer in chargo of the operations at Gisborne, that field inspections had been- made of about 1700 acres, out of the total of over 4500 acres entered. Rejections at the field inspection had boon very few to dato, and present indications wore that only a very small percentage of the areas would be eliminated from tho scheme, as was the case last year. No cutting had commenced vet for the oarliest of the areas had not como to maturity during tho past few weeks ns quickly as was expected at one stage It should not bo long, however, before mowers are busy m the rye grass paddocks.
