CHARGES OF BESETTING.
REMAND GRANTED/ William Frederick Watson and Oswald Saunders appeared on remand in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., charged that on December 6, at Longburn, with a view to compelling Longburn freezing workers to abstain from doing a certain act which they had a legal right to do, to wit, proceeding to work at the Longburn freezing works, they did wrongfully and without legal authority watch and beset the Longburn freezing workers in Foxton Line where they happened to be. Oswald Saunders was further charged that at Palmerston North, on December 2, he did use insulting language in a public place, Foxton Line. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse asked for a remand until Monday next. The Magistrate said that he had suggested that the cases stand over until after the holidays. Mr A. J. McLeavey, who appeared for accused, said that he understood that 30 or 40 others were coming up on summons on besetting charges, and he asked that these men be treated in a similar manner. The Magistrate said that the men were on bail so that they would not be a nuisance in the meantime. He pointed out that they were on arrest the charges would be adjourned to Monday next in the meantime. Bail was allowed as formerly, each accused in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each.
