RAISING OF LOAN
for fitzherbert bridge.
DIFFICULTY FEARED,
In pointing out at to-day’s meeting of the Kairanga County Council that the council’s portion of the cost to be borne in connection with the new Fitzherbert Avenue bridge over the Manawatu River would involve £6OO bo £7OO per annum, Cr. P. G. Mildon expressed the opinion that the finding of the money would present a grave difficulty to the council and the ratepayers. Before proceeding further with the scheme the council’s representatives on the special committee would have to seriously consider the question of how the necessary loan was to bo raised, and how it was to be borne. In his opinion the ratepayers could not bear the additional burden at the present time. There had not been any further weight restrictions placed on the present structure and if it could do duty further, the erection of the new bridge should be deferred. Cr. Batchelar: The experts say that it is in a very bad state and that a new structure is necessary.
The chairman (Cr. Collis): If we Taise any' objection now probably a Commission will be set up and we will be forced into it. Cr. Mildon’s suggestion could, however, be taken as a direction by the council’s representatives.
Ci - . Anderson: After listening to Cr. Mildon one would think that the bottom has fallen out of the world. The City Council is the controlling authority, and if it decides to proceed with the work the county will have to bear its share. If the Kairanga County Council cannot bear its share, something is very much wrong. I haven’t lost nope in the British Empire yet. Cr. Mildon: I don’t want the co.mmi.i*ee to pledge that they can find the money without first considering how it is to be raised, and how it is to bo paid for. The Highways Board has seen fit to cut down oursubsidies to the extent of £2OOO or £3OOO, and as. a result the onus is now on the council to carry out work which the Highways Board should be doing. In my opinion, the bridge should be built by the Highways Board. The original bridge was built by the Government and if it were necessary for the Government to do so then, it is all the more necessary now. Cr. Moody: I am not in favour of the committee calling tenders in Australia. If the contract went there it would mean men being brought to the Dominion while we are paying sustenance for our own unemployed. Cr. Anderson: The suggestion that tenders be called in Australia came from the Highways Board. Cr. Mildon: Well, ratepayers in my riding cannot bear the expense in the meantime. Cr. Shannon: Nor in mine. The discussion then lapsed.
