PAHIATUA, Dec. 13. The many friends of Mrs W. R. Taylor, ICohinui, will regret to learn that she has had to enter a private hospital to undergo an operation. Miss Mackay, Mastertpn, is spending a lengthy holiday with her sister, Mrs C. E. Horrax, Sedcole Street. During her visit to Paliiatua, Mrs U. W. Forbes was the guest of Mrs S. Bolton. Miss C. Stafford, who is returning to Marten, after a residence of a year in Paliiatua, was presented by Mrs W. B. Pickering on behalf of the Methodist Girls’ Bible Glass at the parsonage yesterday afternoon with a token of regard. The gift was accompanied by a letter of goodwill signed by .the members. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Council was held last evening. There wore present: The Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson), C'rs W. H. Murch, J. E. Murphy, F. Britland; W. T. Brown, A. D. Donald, S. K. Siddeils, J. C. Davidson and P. R. Boagey. An apology for absenco was received from Or G. H. Hodd. The county clerk (Mr J. Hutton) wrote as follows: “Mangatainoka River protection works: I am directed by ray council to inform you that, on the advice of its consulting engineers, it has approved of a proposal that additional river protection in the nature of a stone weir should bo constructed on the upstream side of the Pahiatua Railway Bridge. 11l the opinion of niv council, the work is essential for the well-being and safety of the new bridge, in addition to giving some security to lundowners on the eastern banks. Mv council recommends the proposed work for your council’s approval. On tho estimated cost of the work submitted by the consulting engineers it is anticipated that the Main Highways Board will provide £230 4s and the balance of £93 8s will require to be met by your council and the County Council in equal shares.” The. Mayor said it was the engineer’s recommendation. Ho did not think they could set themselves up against him and ho suggested that the council advise, the county that it was not in a position to give an opinion contrary to' tho engineer, hut in their experience the boulder groynes had not been satisfactory in tho past. This .course was decided upon. It was decided to grant £lO to tho Paliiatua Swimming Club. The council decided that a legal opinion bo obtained on the matter of prohibiting hosing during tho summer months. Mr 11. F. Pcarcey was appointed dog tax collector for the year commencing January 1, 1933. The fee for sheep and cattle ’dogs was fixed at 2s 6d each and for all other dogs 10s each. It was decided that an additional 10 per cent, be added to all rates remaining unpaid after February 14. .
