MAN DROWNED.

SWAAIPING OF SMALL BOAT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. As the result of the swamping of a small boat off Palmer Head late this afternoon, Air Ernest Edward Jones, aged 25, a single man, was drowned. There were two men in the boat at tho time, but the other was rescued by some people who were in another boat ill the vicinity. Accompanied by his brother-in-law, Air Joseph McCrohon, Air Jones at tho time of the accident was sotting fishing nets. It is believed the boat was swamped and Air Jones lost his hold of tho craft. The plight of Air AlcCrohon, who clung to the boat, was observed by three men in a boat in the vicinity, and they were able to get him aboard. The accident occurred al>out five o’clock, but the sea at that time and Inter was too rough to allow of efforts to recover the body.

TWO MEN RESCUED. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Dec. 13. After drifting helplessly with a

broken-down engine nearly all day, and when hopes of rescue were rapidly vanishing, two men aboard a 20-foot launch were fortunate enough to be sighted and picked uj> this afternoon by the tramp steamer Newton Elm, when about seven miles out to sea off Pencarrow Head. The Newton Elm, which was passing through Cook Strait on her voyage from Auckland to Westport, brought them to the vicinity of the harbour entrance, where they were transferred to the Government steamer Janie Seddon, and brought to port. The two men aboard the launch wero Alessrs G. Hudson and C. Usher, both of Petone. They left in a launch about four o’clock this morning for Petone, and when off Sinclair Head the engine stopped,’ duo to water reaching the magneto. They drifted until 3.30 this afternoon, when they were sighted by the Newton Elm. During the rescue operations a plank of the launch was stove in and the craft was cast adrift. The rescued men highly praise the seamanship of the Newton Elm’s captain, officers and*crew, and express gratitude at the great kindness they received. '
