A link with the past and a well known andmark in Foxton, a building associated with the prominent pioneers of this district over half a century ago, will shortly disappear. The structure, which was once the home of the Manawatu County Council, is located in Liddell Street and was of massive construction. The timber, for the most part red pine, even to-day is in an excellent state of preservation. Tho building was erected for the Manawatu County Council by the late Mr John Liddeli, of Foxton, in 1877. Mr H. Coley, of Foxton, wan engaged in carting the timber for the building. In those days the Manawatu County took in tho huge area now comprising the Manawatu, Kairanga, Horowhenua, Oroua, Kiwitea and Pohangina counties and prior to removing to Sanson tho offices were shifted to Otaki. They did not remain there long, however, and in 1887 transferred to Sanson where they .have remained ever since. The monthly meeting of tho Borough Council was presided over by the Mayor (Mr M. E. Perreau). The waterworks foreman reported that during November 2, 575,000 gallons of water was pumped. All sewers were flushed and general maintenance work attended to including grubbing noxious weeds, fencing and clearing around hydrants. The poundkeepors reported that three head of stock had been impounded. ! The gas manger reported the works are in satisfactory condition. A deputation from ; the Unemployed Association waited on the council with the request that it permit them to use the cloak room at the Town Hall free of cost provided they pay for the use of the supper room when required; grant the free use of a borough reserve on which to graze 6tock while waiting to be slaughtered for consumption by them; grant a free matinee picture entertainment for their children on the afternoon of December 24, as a Christmas treat. The Mayor pointed out that a free picture matinee was put on annually for all children. The council intended doing this again this year and could not make any distinction and confine the performance to the children of relief workers only. It was decided to grant the committee the uso of a paddock provided the meat is distributed to any relief worker whether a member or non-member of the association. Tho clerk reported that rates levied had been £4903 19s lOd general and £717 6s 6d water, a total of £5621 6s 4d. Of this amount £3003 7s 2d had been paid and £l4O 2s lid allowed in discounts. It was decided to support the Foxton Harbour Board in an endeavour to have the Foxton-Mana-watu Heads, Himatangi-Sanson and Hima-tangi-Rangiotu highways tar sealed. On Saturday an inter-club match wae played on the local courts between Levin and Foxton. the visitors defeating the home team by 134 games (14 sets) to 97 games (2 sets).
