FREIGHTS FOR BUTTER

WAIKATO RAIL CONCESSION. Notification was given the Dairy Farmers’ Union in a letter received yesterday from the Prime Minister (lit. Hon. G. W.'Forbes) that he had received their representations concerning the concession granted in respect of butter railed from the Waikato district to Wellington. He said he had noted the reasons advanced for bringing the matter under his notice, and should be glad to arrange for the Government Railways Board to give them full consideration. Protests were voiced at the last meeting of the union that the concession, which had originally been granted for shipments overseas, was being used to provide cheap freights to bring Auckland butter into the Manawatu district, creating competition between the two provinces on the local market. W 7 hen the letter was read several members exclaimed that the subject had been shelved by the Government. Mr J. Boyce: It is not worth while discussing it. Comment was made by Mr H. Seifert that there was a movement in hand at present to consider the whole position regarding butter. It was decided to write to Mr E. Newman (Marton), a district member on the Railway Board, asking him to support the representations being made by butter producers in this area.
