WOMEN’S WORLD.

Mr and Mrs R. Carter, Sandon Road, Feilding, are speiiding a holiday at Waikanae.

Mrs E. Wilson and her son Tennant have left for ail eight weeks’ tour of the North Island. Miss Lorraine Saunders, of Auckland University and Training College, is spending the Christmas vacation with her parents at Fitzherbert West. Miss Saunders intends taking up missionary work in the near future.

The engagement is announced of Eileen Muriel, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs L. V. Dahl, of Palmerston North, and Hector John Lewer, of Palmerston North, third son of Mr aijd Mrs H. C. Lewer, of Ohingaiti. Evidence of the popularity of Mrs M. Baxter, of the staff of the Hotel Midland, was forthcoming yesterday afterlioon, when guests, patrons and prominent business men to the number of 40 assembled to farewell her in view of her impending departure for Greywhere she will assume control of the Greytown Hotel. Speeches, expressive of appreciation of courtesies to patrons and the travelling public generally, were followed by presentations of jewellery, silverware and brassware from several groups.

The death occurred at Levin on Thursday of Mrs E. W. Collier, at the age of 76 vears. The deceased lady was born at Eastbourne, England, and was first married to Mr Charles M. Matthews, with whom she came to New Zealand 53 years ago. During a long residence in Wellington she was well known as a fine teacher of music, and for 30 years she was a member of the choir of St. Paul’s Pro-Catliedral. Her second marriage took her to Levin, where she taught music for about ten years and was a highly valued worker for St. Mary’s Church. _

Miss Dorothy Sargisson, Feilding, has been visiting Nelson.

Misses C. M. Laurenson and M. Arlidge, who have been on the staff of the College Street School, retire under the rationing system in .the new scholastic year. In bidding them farewell at yesterday’s break-up function of the school, the headmaster, Mr W. A. Swinbourn, wished them good fortune in the future.

Miss V. D. Louis of the teaching staff of the College Street School, who will enter upon new duties at a Wanganui school at the completion of the Christmas vacation, was yesterday farewelled by her fellow teachers. The headmaster, Mr W. A. Swinbourn, paid a tribute to the excellent service Miss Louis had given the children under her charge and expressed sincere regret at her departure. In asking her to accept a clock as a token of remembrance, the speaker concluded by extending to her best wishes for the future. At the break-up ceremony in the 'afternoon, Mrs Bowler-Watson, chairwoman of the ladies’ committee of the school, handed Miss Louis a charming bouquet, and in so doing thanked her for her loyal co-operation. GOLDEN WEDDING. MR AND MRS H. SANSON. A pleasant gathering was held at the residence of Mr C. J. Parlane, Claudelands, Hamilton, on Wednesday, when Mr and Mrs Henry Sanson, of Auckland, celebrated their golden wedding. Mr a.nd Mrs Sanson, who are 77 and 78 years of age respectively, were both bom at Lower Hutt, and were married on December 14, 1882, by Rev. W. Connell. Mrs Sanson was a daughter of the late Mr Thomas Burt, and Mr Sanson was a son of the late Mr Henry Sanson, the founder of the town of Sanson. Mr and Mrs Sanson lived at Lower Hutt for some years, and later went to Rongotea. In recent years they have lived in Pukeora Avenue, Remuera. Their children include Mrs C. J. Parlane, Hamilton; Mrs T. Cleland, Auckland; Mr Norman Sanson, Tapuhi; Mr Edgar Sanson, Oha.upo; and Miss Vera Sanson, Auckland. ASSOCIATION CROQUET. TWO MATCHES PLAYED. A Corbridge Stars match was played under the auspices of the Manawatu Croquet Association on the Northern green yesterday, when Mesdames Dickel and Capp, the holders, lost to Mesdames Robertson and Radford, 19 —26. A Brighton Mallets match was played on the Levin green on Tuesday, Mesdames Bagrie and Dempsey, the holders, beating Mesdames Snelling and Morgan 26 —13. HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS. CHRISTMAS PARTY HELD. There were about 100 young people present at the Palmerston North Girls’ High School last evening, when an enjoyable Christmas party was held by the Old Girls’ Association. The decorations included streamers and appropriate Christmas emblems, Chinese lanterns shading the lights. Conspicuous on the wall was the school coat-of-arms surrounded with Christmas greetings. There was a very large attendance which included Mrs M. Rhodes, principal of the school, also three of the vice-presidents, Mrs R. A. Fuller, Mrs B. J. Jacobs and Mrs Milward. There were manv amusing fancy costumes. Miss Pat Edwards gave a clever exhibition of the “Sailor’s Hornpipe.” [Misses I. C. and V. Wood rendered an instrumental trio, which was enthusiastically encored, a.nd Misses Margaret W T alker and Melva Day, vocal items. Mrs S. Morgan assisted throughout at the piano. In response to numerous requests the Misses Wood contributed further trios. Prizes were awarded for the best fancy dresses, the judges being Mesdames Fuller and Jacobs, who had a difficult task. After a grand inarch, the following announcements were made: Most effective costume, Mrs Milhvard (Pierrette) 1, Miss Joan Shepherd (Mephistopheles) 2, most humorous, Miss Grace Fuller (bag wash) 1, Miss Melva Day (hiker) 2; Victorian Bathing Beauties, v.h.c. Misses Daisy Hadfield and Grace Fuller were the winners at “musical arms.”

The committee responsible for the arrangements consisted of Misses E. Hosking, M. Richards, J. Brown, IC. Birnie, R. Wimsett, A. Varcoe, C. Christian, L. Sinclair, N. Nash, E. Gilchrist, C. McNeile, under the direction of the two secretaries, Misses R. Partridge a.nd M. Walker. A sit-down supper was enjoyed when Miss Partridge outlined activities proposed for the coming year. The toast to “Absent Old Girls” was proposed by Miss Birnie.

PLUNKET SOCIETY. MONTHLY" MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Council Chambers yesterday afternoon, Mrs A. Coomb 1 ? presiding. Also present were Mesdames H. B. Free, H. B. Bennett, Fairbrother, C. A. Small, A. A. Langley, Findlay Wilson, W. G. Miller, Miss McLagan, and Mrs M. Aitchison (hon. secretary). Apologies for absence were forwarded on behalf of Mesdames L. A. Abraham, G. S. Peren, J. Murray, L. H. Collinson, J. Mounsey, A. Grig’or, A. E. Mansford and J. H. Whyte. The nurse’s report for November disclosed that 1429 visits had been paid to the office, made up as follows: —694 adults, 636 babies, 99 older children; 134 visits were paid to homes. Five visits were paid to Foxton,. when 11 homes were visited; 147 visits to the office were received (68 adults, 5 1 babies and 22 older children). There were no new cases reported. Sales tor the month amounted to £29 3s 3d, and 'also an account for 10s was paid. 1 ar cels of clothing were received from Mesdames Clayton, Mabim and Bates. A membership fee (ss) was acknowledged from Mrs Adcock, also a canvas cot from an anonymous donor, and an anonymous donation of £3 3s. Donations were also gratefully received fiom Mrs E. Lock (10s) and Mrs C. S. Collins (£1). The sum of £1 Is 6d accrued from the collection box. A communication was received from the Foxton branch enclosing their subsidy. ' , , The question of annual subscriptions was discussed, and it was decided to make a grant to the tno nurses in view of tlieir splendid woik throughout a very trying year. Mrs Coombs extended cordial greetings to the committee , members and wished them all good fortune in the coming year. . Parcels of clothing were • received from Mesdames Clayton and Bates.
