LONGBURN SCHOOL
SPORTS GATHERING. KEEN CONTESTS RESULT. Glorious weather conditions yesterday assisted towards making the sports meeting, which invariably prefaces the distribution, of prizes won during the year at the Longburn School, most enjoyable. Possessing, as the school does, an energetic committee, a.n enthusiastic headmaster and pupils who are instilled with the will to achieve, the annual wind-up function is always a red-let-ter day in the historv of the suburban township. Yesterday’s proved to be no exception, and the sports gathering, which was contested under regulations and rules similar to those which ato associated with adult contests, was n complete success and provided exceptionally keen competition, a rUn-off to determine the championship being necessitated in both the senior and junior boys’ divisions. The proceedings were followed by an interested gathering of parents and past pupils, and a lengthv programme was put through. In addition to the championship events —which were contested on a handicap hasp—every competitor gained a prize and the hearts of 80 small children were filled with delight as a result. The officials controlling the sports gathering were: Handicapper and starter, Mr C. C. Hills; assistant, Mr W. Weddell (chairman of committee); judges, Messrs Sterling. Day and Ormsby; clerk of course. Mr J. Walker. SPORTS PRIZES. Thelma Oliver won the Herbert Smith Trust Cup for the girls’ championship with 9pts. Betty Wilson being runner-up with Bpts. In the senior boys’ Tlieo Ztircher, last year’s winner, again won from sc r atch after a run-off with Richard Waldegrave (6vds) over a distance of 150yds, the dividing margin being a very narrow one, while in the junior division four boys tied. In the run-off over 150yds Owen Mitchell, who ha.d annexed the honours in the two preceding years, was beaten by Arthur Mahoney, to whom he was required to concede 6yds. Each winner, in addition to being the hohler of the championship cup for the ensuing twelve months, received a miniature cup which he retains for all time. _ The detailed results of the various events in the championship series were as follow: Senior Girls’ Cup:—7svds: I. Moffntt 2. F, T« Rang, 3. 920vds: B. Best 1. A. Moffntt 2. W. M. Walker 2. W. Stephenson 3. Cupwinner: Arthur Mahoney. Tug-o’-war, Country v. Town, was won bv the former in two straight pulls, while the relay race. Bovs v. girls, the latter receiving a substantial handicap, was won l>v the girls. CLASS PRIZES. At the conclusion of the sports the company assembled in front of the school when the chairman of the .'om mittee, Mr Weddell, took the opportunity, prior to handing out the prizes, to thank the public of Longburn and district for their support, for by it a most enjoyable day had been furnished the children. The year had been a most satisfactory one where the school was concerned and he congratulated the headmaster, Mr Hills, on the outcome of the examinations, for of a class of 14 pupils in Standard 6, 14 had gained proficiency certificates. Many of the children would no doubt be leaving the school and lie wished them every success in their future activities, while to the whole company the speaker extended the compliments of the season. The oportiinity was also taken by Master Noel Pratt, on behalf of the pupils of Standard 6, to hand Mr Hills a Christmas gift as a small token of their appreciation, while Miss Marna McClelland, on behalf of Standards 2, 3 and 4, made Miss Reeves, their teacher, a similar presentation. In acknowledging the gifts Mr Hills stated that by the expressions of goodwill he felt that he had accomplished something. The speaker also thanked the committee and supporters for the happy day they had afforded the children and lnmself, and he did not hesitate to say that the Longburn School was the happiest of any school in the Dominion. There was nothing better than happiness and contentment, he added, and in that respect the Longinirn School had its full measure. In extending a welcome to Miss O’Donnell, the infant mistress who had joined the staff of the school late in the year, Mr Weddell stated that the school had been happily situated m respect to its staff and, on his call, the children gave three hearty cheers for their teachers. . ~ . . , Recipients of prizes for their scholastic ability were as under:— Efficiency awards. —Standard \ i : N Pratt 1, J.
