ENGLISHMEN IN TASMANIA. AMES AND PAYNTER BAT FREELY MANY FOURS RECORDED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LAUNCESTON, Dec. 18. Seven wickets fell for 107 runs before lunch on the second day. of the match England v. Tasmania, which was continued yesterday. Ames and Pnynter joined the century-makers, the former scoring his runs in 163 minutes, and the latter in 128 minutes. Ames hit ten fours. Paynter hit twelve fours and ono six. England was dismissed for 502 runs. Rain fell during lunch. Rushfortli, tho Tasmanian captain, was unable to resume yesterday, owing to a leg injury. Tasmania had three wickets down for 137 runs when heavy rain at 6 o’clock ended play for the day. Following were the scores: ENGLAND. First Innings.
SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. NEW SOUTH WALES. ADELAIDE, Dec. 18. In the Sheffield Shield match with South Ausralia, New South Wales in the first innings scored 379 (Fingleton 68,' Brown 40, McCabe 67, Cummins 78, Oldfield 40). Lee took 3 wickets for 48 runs. Grimmett 4 for 138. South Australia in the second innings have one wicket down for 37 (Richardson 27, Nitschke not out 10).
QUEENSLAND v. VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, Dec. 18. Queensland scored 126 in the first innings of the Sheffield Shield match with Yicoria (Cook 33, Brew 25). Fleetwood-Smith took six wickets for 59 runs, Alexander two for 41. Victoria in the first innings lost one wicket for 59 runs ('Ponsford 24, Woodfull not out 28). The wicket was easy at the start, but light rain fell in the afternoon. Play was stopped at 5.40 p.m. on an appeal against the light. BOWLING FEAT. Per Pro's Association. ROTORUA, Dec. 19. There was a sensational finish in the representative cricket match between the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty teams at the week-end when J. Hinton, bowling for Rotorua, dismissed the last five Bay of Plenty batsmen with five successive deliveries. The ball which he used was pi'esented to him by the captain of the Bay of Plenty team in recognition of the feat.
