WHAKARONGO.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AVHAKARONGO, Dec. 18. Tho weather could not have been better for the Parents’ Day at the breakingup of the school on Friday. There was a very good attendance, hut many farmers were taking advantage of the brilliant weather to get their hay in and could not bo present. Mrs Eggers, tho head teacher, was in charge of the proceedings, assisted by Miss O’Brien (pupil teacher) and Mr Harvey, tho chairman of tlio school committee. The children's work was on display in the schoolrooms for the parents to examine and was highly praised by them. Tho children opened tho programme with the National Anthem. Then followed a short programme ol songs and dances, which were as follow: —“Kneeling Salaam,” seniors; skipping dance, juniors; quickstep, seniors; song, “Barcarolle,” seniors; folk dance, juniors; reel, seniors; ribbon folk dance, juniors; song, “Moonlight Frolics,” seniors; pendulum swing, seniors; curtsey dance, seniors; recitation, “Pirates,” A. McCool, T. Hodgson, Y. Harvey; “Maori Canoe Song,” seniors; “Sitting Salaam,” seniors. Mr Harvey called upon Mr G. H. Bennett, who for many years has presented the prizes to tho children, to again honour the school in this manner. Mr Bennett spoke a few words to tho parents’ and children. Ho stated how much pleasure it gavo him to bo present on these occasions and congratulated the teachers upon the results of the recent examination. Ho thought tho children were very fortunate in having such capable teachers. He then called upon tho children to give them a hearty vote of thanks. Mr Bennett commented upon the appearanco of tho school grounds and gavo 'the children very sound advice for their future. After wishing them a merry Christmas he extended congratulations to the children who had gained proficiency certificates, as follow: Tholma Novvcombe, XV. Yautier, K. AVoodd, D. Field, J. AAoodd and R. Hodgson. Tho following attendance certificates wero also presented: Full attendance, H. Christiansen, V. Harvey, D. Edwards, J. AVoodd, AV. Vautier, G. Spall and P. Christiansen; thoso who had not missod fivo half-days, J. Spall, R. Hodgson, B. Cowley, K. AVoodd, E. Morris, I. Johansen, E. Olson, T. Nowcombc. Prize books woro then presented to every school child. The following special prizos wero awarded: May Johansen, AV. Hazelhurst (sewing), F. Rout (progress), H. Christiansen (sowing). A special prize for the pupil with tho highest marks in the examination was won by 11. Harrowfield. On behalf of the Standard 6 pupils who are leaving school J. AVoodd presented Mrs Eggers with a picture as a token of the esteem in which they hold her. The junior room also presented Miss O'Brien with a pretty Christmas gift. Mr Harvey called upon tho childron to give cheers for Mr Bennett, and apologised for the absence of the men folk. The childron gave three cheers for tho school committee for providing the prizes. Afternoon tea was served by tho ladies of the district.
