HOSPITAL FINANCES.
STATEMENT TO BOARD. COLLECTION OF FEES. “Returns from patients’ fees have been lower since the end of November,” stated the managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) in the, course of a summarised financial statement to the Palmerston North Hospital Board this afternoon. “During the past two weeks the fees received have been £2OO less than expected.” The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) : Is the position getting progressively worse ? The managing-secretary: AYe had a bad time for two or two and a half months at the beginning of the financial year, but later some arrears were wiped oft. However, current accounts are not now being met. AVe are carrying forward more accounts than ever before in the history of the board. I have small doubt that we are facing a bad time and altogether we have received during the last nine months £llOO less than estimated in patients’ fees. Probably at the end of the year we will be showing a deficit of £IOOO in this respect. A r oices: Probably more. The managing-secretary: The AVellington Hospital Board is down to tho extent of £lO per occupied bed. AA’itliout the Napier fee»s for earthquake patients we are about level with last year. AVe have secured 100 judgments this year and are x>utting accounts into the solicitors’ hands at the rate of 25 or 30 a month.
The managing-secretary commentedthat comparatively few pensioners were now entering tlio Old People’s Home, and were trying to manage outside on their allowance of 15s 9d week, ly. An amount of £19,725 ha.d been spent upon the maintenance of the Palmerston North Hospital and the year wtould finish within the estimates. At present the board was Spending £250 a month less than in the winter, saving £l6O in coal alone. “We are £llOO overspent in charitable a.id,” added the secretary, “and though the board has laid down a policy that it will not assist ablebodied men, we cannot refuse food to women and children.” A voice: We can. It is the Government’s job to find it.
