PARKING OF CARS

LINTON STREET PROBLEM. Reporting to the City Council, last evening, with reference to the parking of cars on the eastern side of Linton Street, the transit committee ’stated that it had decided that the 1 present by-law allowing “head-into-kerb” parking on the eastern side of the street from Church to Ferguson Streets he repealed, and that per- ! manent parallel parking on the same side between the points mentioned be substituted.

| It was stated that a letter had been i received from Air H. N. AVatson dealI ing with (a) parking of cars in Lin- ' ton Street; suggesting (b) that a clause bo added to the motor regulai itons by which drivers of cars passing iany parking place shall keep to the |centre line of tire road; and (c) pointring out that the present system of • the buses stopping before a corner was dangerous. It was resolved to inform Air Watson, of the committee’s decision contained in the foregoing regarding parking in Linton Street, and to say that owing to the different decisions of magistrates throughout New Zealand in regard to the second clause that the council is unable to make any alteration in tho present by-law. and that flic matter mentioned in clause (c) will l>c dealt with when the by-laws relating, to traffic are under consideration. The Alayor stated that he was heartily sick of the parking problem in Linton Street and would he glad when it was settled satisfactorily. Cr. Fitzherbert moved as an amendment to the committee’s recommendation that parking he permitted nose-in from a point 30 feet inside the Church Street corner to within 30 feet of the Afnnawntu Club’s back entrance, and then parallel parking on the remainder of the eastern side of Linton Street to Ferguson Street, nothing to he permitted on the other side at all.

Cr. J. Hodgens counselled adhering to tho committee’s recommendation.

Cr. J. AR-Lood supported the amendment, which was lost, and the committee's recommendation endorsed.
