RACING NEWS

THE MANAWATU CUP. PAST HISTORY. WELL KNOWN PERFORMERS. (By “Binocular.”) Boxing Day will find tho time-honoured Manawatu Cup race, which was first contested in 1396, again coining up for decision. During tho first four years it was known as tlio Palmerston Cup, but tho title was changed on Boxing Day just 36 years ago. As a result of tho Auckland Racing Chib’s meeting clashing with the Awapuni fixture, the fields in the Manawatu Cup suffer somewhat, but nevertheless, there are several instances where the winner has gono on to add tho Wellington Cup approximately a month later. Some years prior to 1892 it had been the custom of tho club to hold a one-day meeting on Boxing Day. when the principal event bore tho title of the Boxing Day Handicap, tho distance having varied from a mile and a-lialf to a mile and three-quarters. History discloses that Germaine annexed the honours for three years in succession. Tho following yeai—in 1889 —Montrose was tho winner, while Daniel O’Rourke scored in 1890 and 1891.

Liberator, a six-year-old gelding by Betrayer from Diana, won the first Palmerston Cup when carrying 8.9. Attending him homo were Rangipuhi and Retina, while among the unplaced division were Torpedo, Sword belt. Musket, Zacclio, Ngati-Oma and Rar.gatira. Retina, who had just previously won the North Canterbury Cup and had acted as runner-up to Daniel O’Rourke the year previously in tho Boxing Day Handicap, was tho favourite, but Liberator, who was the public’s second choice, proved to be tho winner. while Rangipuhi also got up to beat Retina by a length. After the race Liberator was sold by his owner, Mr Daly, of the West Coast, to Mr M. Walker, in whoso colours tho gelding won the Grand National Hurdles. I He was in turn disposed of to Mr P. ; Butler and went on to repeat his victory , in the Grand National Hurdles with 12.6 on his back, and then add the Great Northern Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeplechase in 1895. The threo next Palmerston Clips were won in turn by Mr P. Butler’s An Revoir (St. George— Farewell), who just previously had won the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap and Metropolitan Handicap, and subsequently scored in the Wanganui Stakes a.n.d tho Wellington Autumn Handicap; Mr W. R. Tuck’s Irish Twist (Ingoniar —Torori), who, earlier in the day, had won (lie opening event of the programme, tho Telegraph Handicap, seven furlongs, and later on in tho season added tho Rangitikei Cup and the Wanganui Winter Oats to his record; and Mr J. G. Collins’s Lorelei (Cruiser—Laurel), tvho, however, was not tho mare of that name who so often' appears in modern New Zealand pedigrees—this mare being by Lcolinus from the Traducer mare Naiad, a daughter of Mermaid. Lorelei was tho winner of tho race again the fifth year, when tho title had changed to tlio Manawatu Cup. She was the first of the three horses who have succeeded twice in the race, the other two being Morrivonia (1909 and 1910) and Nobleman (1917 and 1918). Between his successes Nobleman also won tho Wellington Cup. An interesting race was the Cup that the 1901 New Zealand Cup winner Tortulla Torpedo —Honeysuckle won on tho Boxing Day of the same year, carrying 9.8, the record weight for many years carried to victory in the contest. Tortulla had to concede 121 b to the next on the list. Palaver, who finished third, and two stone to Toil, whom she beat by a long head. The race was practically a duel between Tortulla and Toa who rante away

from tho field nt the home turn. C. Jenkins, an Tortulla, waited till about 30 yards from the post, and then released a fast, short run, just cutting Toa out in tho last few strides.

In tho onsuing years since Tortulla’s victory, the weight-carrying record stood until Historic won in 1930 with 9.9. On that occasion the local representative, Merry Damon, put forward a great claim for tho honours when, after being last to turn into the straight, ho just failed by a head to reach Historic. There was an unusual episode surrounding the 1929 ccntest when Sea town was prevented from going to Auckland owing to his shipping arrangements from New Plymouth breaking down. On tho morning of tho race he was rushed through to Awapuni whero ho had also been accepted. lie was early out in front and stayed thero in win narrowly from Cashier with hirst Acre third. Of that field in 1929 Seatown is tho only member included in this year’s race, but with tho added years and tho absence of any recent racing, ho will have little to cominond him next Monday. NOTES. Tho apprentice Jockoy, N. R. McKenzie, who is attached to H. L. Russell’s stable, received concussion and a broken collarbone when Musquil fell with him in tho Waipa Plato on Saturday, and was removed to tho To Awamutu Hospital. Tho judicial committee of the Waipa Racing Club held an inquiry into the fall of Musquil, and, after hearing the evidence of several riders who rode in tho race, decided that the fall was purely accidental. Mr P. A. Swney stated on Saturday that Volitnond has been turned out and will do no further racing. Volitnond is a seven-year-old mare by Limotid from Tivoli, and she may have had a bettor record than she possesses only for mishaps and other troubles that affected her. At her best she was a very capable performer, her victories including tho Takapuna Plate and the Alison Cup. Her winnings amount to £2045. Mr F. J. McManemin'has decided not to rehandicap for their Ellcrslio engagement's any of the horses who won at To Awamutu on Saturday. These include the Cup candidates Teels and the Railway Handicap candidate All Humbug. As the result of straining tho muscles of his off hind leg, All Supreme is unlikely lo fulfil his engagement in the Queen’s Plato or Railway Handicap at Ellertdio, and unless rapid improvement in made, the trip will not be undertaken. The incident in which All Supreme suffered occurred on Saturday morning after the breakfast interval, when lie sot off for a task on No. 1 track the reverse way, accompanied by Arises. They had nol gone more than a furlong at half- ; pace when All Supremo faltered and appeared for a time to be in a bad way. However, be was able to walk away, favouring a hind leg. Arises may not make tho trip alone.

Three of defunct Mercian King’s progeny, all three-year-olds, are now regular workers on the Hastings track. Royal Shift, from Head Scrang’s dam, Chemise, has already raced and is said to bo a most promising sort. The two others are as yet unnamed, one being a gelding from o Wormwood —Kooya marc and owned by Mr A. Symcs, ai.d the other a (illy from a Joculator mare and owned by Mr G. B. Beatsoti.

Although Billy Boy has only been in work a few weeks, ho is rounding up into shape very rapidly and bears a bright and healthy appearance. He has been schooled on that occasion, In Vain, is still on the all liis customary cleverness, and may bo given a race at the coming meeting at Ellcrslio. Owing to a short preparation Billy Boy may not be forward enough to see out a solidly-run two miles, but the racing is sure to benefit him for later engagements. SPECIAL WEIGHTS. EVENTS AT AUCKLAND.
