BARTER SPREADS.
SEQUEL TO UNEMPLOYMENT. Direct barter of labour for food, shelter, clothing and other necessities is a remarkable development from the widespread unemployment in the United States. In this new “Help Ourselves” movement the workless are forming co-operative groups and negotiating directly with employers and others. The plan promises to become nation-wide and to develop important economic ramifications. Through the “National Exchange Association,” in Now York, the unemployed give manufacturers, distributors and landlords their services, receiving the necessities of life without money. The exchange scheme embraces the agricultural regions.
