THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST. A moderate anti-cyclone was centred yesterday off the east coast of the South Island, while a shallow depression has been located on tire Tasman Sea. South-easterly winds about Cook Strait; elsewhere easterly to northerly; moderate to fresh and increasing. Rather rough seas north of Farewell Spit and Kaikoura; elsewhere smooth to moderate in New Zealand waters. Strong northerly winds in the northern portion of the Eastern Tasman Sea, with rough seas; moderate to fresh easterly to south-easterly in the southern portion, with moderate seas. Dull and misty weather in the North Island and eastern districts of the South Island, with rain in the far north and gradually extending southward. Mainly fair in the western and southern portions of the South Island.
DISTRICT REPORT. WARMER TEMPERATURES. The Government meteorologist telegraphed to-day:—The indications are for moderate to strong south-easterly winds, backing by east to north. There is a prospect of fair to cloudy weather with the temperatures probably becoming warmer. The barometer has a falling tendency. MANAWATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon. —lft 3ins.
