PERSONAL.

Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Publio Works, left for the north by the Limited express last evening. He will return to Wellington early in the New Year.

Rt. Rev. W. H. Baddeley, Bishop of Melanesia, accompanied by Rev. if. C. Long, organising-secretary for the Board of -Missions, paid a brief visit to Palmerston North last evening. They left later for Auckland. Mr D. Stevens, of Foxton Line, Awapuni, who underwent an operation some weeks ago, has recovered sufficiently to permit of his being discharged from hospital. His friends will be pleased to learn that his health is now much improved. Mr A. W. Downer, who was postmaster at Rotorua prior to his retirement on superannuation, and several years ago was attached to the Palmerston North Post Office, lias been on a brief visit to this oentre. Mr Downer left for the north last evening.

The British Foreign Secretary, Sir John Simon, who was prevented from attending the session of the League of Nations Council at Geneva by a severe cold, is confined to his house in London, and will probably have to remain indoors for two or three days (states a London message). Mr J. Candy, of Linton-Street, who underwent an operation this week, is, his many friends will be pleased to learn, making a very satisfactory recovery. At the quarterly meeting, last evening, of the Cuba Street Methodist Church,’ of which Mr Candy is an of-fice-bearer, a motion of good wishes was extended to him. The death occurred at his residence, Carterton, yesterday, of Mr John Beaven Eaton, at the age of 69 years. Mr Eaton, who was born at Taita, went to Ballance when the present main road was merely a bush track. La.tor, after many years spent in the King Country, he returned to the Wairarapa and took up farming in Greytown, whore he lived for nine years. He leaves a widow and a family of three sons a,nd one daughter, one of the sons being Mr Roland Eaton, of Otaki,
