RACING NEWS

WORKERS AT AWAPUNI. AN OFF-MORNING. RIDERS FOR BOXING DAY. (By “Binocular.”) Matters were very quiet at Awnpuni this morning when tho local contingent due to raco on Boxing Day wore restricted to pace work on tho plough for the main part, being worked tho reverse way. No. 1 grass was also available and some of the youngsters trotted and cantered thereon. Among those who wero given tasy tasks wero Joyspear, Minstrel Lad, Beau Gallanto, Senegal, Mercian Prince, Bee Acre, Beaconsfiold, Nebulae, After Money, Catalogue, Hint, Colossian, Royal Jest and Equitant, but whore Equitant, Beau Gallante and Senogal are concerned they will not -come in till tho second day. Easterly was trotted round on tho lead several times. The absence of nny of the visiting contingent. has minimised interest in tho local track operations, but matters should be brighter to-morrow and on Sunday morning when tho winding-up gallops will take place. Among thoso oxpected to arrive today aro M. J. Carroll with Paganelli and Holly Holm, H. Gutts with Fleeting Glance, Drumfire and Silent Flight, and F. Christmas with Red Heckle. The only gallop executed this morning was that ot tho Mnrohalong oolt Safari who, with R. Reed in tho saddle, ran along the back straight from tho six furlong post to the three furlongs post, thereby having a straight run of just ovor two furlongs prior to taking the turn. Tho previous morning the colt had failed to produce his best on tho turn when racing from the three furlongs post home, but ho showed considerable improvement by running the three furlongs under the changed conditions in 38 2-ssec. Tigerism and Royal Bengal, two members of R. Johnston’s New Plymouth team, who claimed dual engagements at Auckland and Awapuni, wore scratched for the Manawatu meeting at 4.30 p.m. yesterday. It is understood that Tigerism will take his place in tho Auckland Cup field. R. Reed was at the tracks this morning doing riding work nnd he will not go north to Ellorslie till to-morrow night. However, he will return for the second and third days, his rides on Tuesdny including Beau Gallante, Joie de Val, Lady Quex (Palmerston North Stakes) nnd either Retract or Red Heckle.

Sporting Chance, who was to have been a runner in the Gillies Hack Handicap, has gone lame nnd will not be a starter. It is not improbable that his owner-trainer will not persevere with him further. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS.

The following riding engagements have been announced for Boxing Day: M. H. Nicol. —Juggle. A. Jenkins.—Cape Fair.

O. Thompson.— Beaconsfiold. J. Barry.—Bee Acre. H. F. Gray.—Catalogue. D. Cotton. —Fleeting Glance, Drumfire. L. Faulkner. —Statuary, Silent Flight. G, F. Dick.—Posy, White Squall, Quietly. L. Daly.—Vivetto, Greenhorn, Lancet. S. Anderson. —Mercian Prince, Colossian, Minstrel Lad, Atholspear, Spearful, Chock Say. W. Broughton.—Nebulae, After Money, Joio do Val Autopay, Solitaire 11., King Tliomond, Pomp.' NOTES. Joie de Val (says a Wellington report) has done a good preparation for tho Manawatu Cup, and if she fails it will not bo on the score of fitness. She works well enough on the tracks to win good races, but most of her public form is disappointing. At Levin and Feilding, however, she showed a definite improvement. At Tronthom yesterday morning she jumped away from the winning post (about nine furlongs), and she ran the last mile in lmin. 47 4-ssee, tho final half in 54seo. This was a useful trial, as the mare had to make all her running. Notice lias been given to the Auckland Racing Club that Weatherwise, Alignment, Bell Topper nnd Thespis, hitherto trained by If. Gray, have been transferred to his son, J. L. Gray, as trainer. These four horses are all engaged at the coming meeting at Ellerslie. At Trentham yesterday morning on. the two-year-old grass track, which was very much faster than the plough, the two-vear-old Quietly (Gunn), who is looking exceptionally well, ran half amile in 49 sec. This filly has a very definite chance in the Nursery Handicap at Awapuni on Monday with her 7.7, in spite of the favourable reports about Golden Hair, Pqrotiti. Lady Nan nnd Silent Flight.—Wellington Post. Araios was responsible for the best halfmile of the morning yesterday in beating Tray mein by a length in 50sec. lie jumped away tho better, and ho held his companion, who was trying to got up on terms along his outside, always at bay by about a length. Good figures were returned by the three-year-old Shambles —Degage gelding who cleared right away from the two-year-old Valdarado whom he beat home by three or four lengths at the end of half a mile clocked at 50 3-sseo. This Shambles gelding, who is n half-brother to Joie d,e Val, is in J. T. Young’s stable, and is developing into a very promising sort. He has not yet been entered for racing anywhere. Posy and Golden Horn ran naif a mile up the back in 52 2-ssec. Capetown finished a length in front of Cape Fair at the end of an easy seven furlongs in lmin. 36 sec, the final half-mile in Msec. Moab Queen always held an advantage over Azure in their six furlongs, beating him by a couple of lengths in Jmin. 20 3-5 secs, the last half-mile in 55sec. Teastream ran three furlongs up the back in 38 3-ssec. Milnrow finished half a length ahead of Sir Pombal at tho end of half a mile in 53sec. Maypav sprinted three furlongs down the straight in 39 3-5 sec.

THE MANAWATU CUP. SOME INTERESTING FEATURES. FAVOURITE’S RECORD. (By “Binocular.”) A perusal of the records of the Manawatu Cup since 1920 discloses that in that period oidy three favourites have proved capablo of fulfilling the expectations of their backers. In 1921 a sixth favourite in Rude (8.9) led the field homo, the favourite, Molynoux (8.12), being unplaced, while twelve months later still worse befell when Paonui (7.8), who ranked ninth favourite in a field of 10 runners, scored, whereas the favourite, Marquetcur (9.6) finished outside the money. Backers were more fortunate in 1923 when Mark Time (9.0) who was the public’s elect, led homo tho bracketed pair, Trespass (7.13) and Bonotter (8.9). As the second and third horses ranked second favourite, tho public wore well on the mark. Peculiarly enough another bracketed pair figured in the placings tho following year, Clandhu (7.4) nnd Sunart (9.5), who ran in the colours of tho local sporteinan, Mr R. A. McKenzie, occupying first and third berths. Their success was well anticipated by patrons who had installed them favourite on the day, although it was probably Sunart, tho winner a few weeks previously of the New Zealand Cup, who was tho stronger fancied of the pair. Mr McKenzie was in the happy position of being able to lead in his second Manawatu Cup winner in 1925 when Clarinda (7.12) led Enthusiasm (8.11) and Nguta (8.11) home. However, it broko the run of favourites for it was Ngata who was the public’s first fancy with Enthusiasm also preferred to Clarinda. GREAT FAMILY RECORD. Tho winner was at the time a three-year-old filly, by Kilbroney from Blackada, and was thus a half-sister to the victor of the preceding year. Clandhu was a year the elder, but he claimed -Martian as his sire. The family sequence was continued the following Christmas when Novar (7.4), an older half-brother by Sarto, brought o(T a surpriso by winning for Mr D. Munro, who had secured him Irom Mr McKenzie, the favourite, Rapier (8.0) finishing third. Howevor, while Novar later proved himself a useful stake earner, more particularly over the hurdlos, he did not attain the heights of Rapier.

The public wero again close to tho mark in 1927, although they proved to bo slightly astray when they anticipated that yet another of Blackada’n progeny, Piuthair (8.10), would, win, the full-sistor to Clarinda being beaten into third place by Lady Desmond (7.8), the second fuvourite, and by Joy Bird (7.8), the third elect. Mr R. A. McKenzie was thereby prevented from annexing hie third cup in four years, while it. likewise halted tho remarkable sequence of family successes. For the second occasion within tho period under review a ninth favourito proved to be the winner when the Manawatu Cup of 1928 went to Star Area. There were a dozen runners on that occasion and tho favourite, First Sight. (8.5), was among the unplaced division. Then came Scatoun’s success of 1929 when a change in the programme intended for tho chestnut, gelding, as a result of his owner’s inability to ship him from New Plymouth in time to contest the Auckland Cup, saw him rushed through to Awapuni to take his place in the Manawatu Cup and win with 8.4., Rabbi, who had been installed favourite, finishing outside of tho money. A favourite again came into the picture in 1930 when Historic, despite being required to establish a weight-carrying record of 9.9 for tho race, was installed in the position to carry Ilia backers through, if by a very narrow margin. Last year Arrow Lad 8.0, who ranked sixth favourite, led Lady Pam (9.0) nnd Spearful (8.1) home, Lady Pam being tho third olect in the betting order and Spearful tho favourite. Like Sunart in 1924, Spearful had returned from, lliccarton with a New Zealand Cup to his credit, but unlike the former he had not a bracketed companion to help his backers secure a dividend. THE FAVOURED POUNDAGE.

Although the Manawatu Cup race has been conducted under the titles of tho Boxing Day Handicap and the Palmerston Cup, an examination of tho poundages which have been carried to victory since 1892 finds that the big event on Boxing Day at Awapuni has been won on four occasions only by horses carrying 9.1 or over, and a like number of times by horses weighted between 8.7 nnd 9.0. Horses carrying poundages between 8.1 and 8.6 have scored on 10 occasions, while those between 7.7. and 8.0. have won 12 times. The lighter scale candidates have not enjoyed the success one might anticipate, for the Cup has only been won by horses with poundages between 7.0. and 7.6 in six instances, while prior to raising the minimum to 7.0 four won with still lighter poundages. SUCCESSFUL RIDERS. To tho old timer horseman, C. Jenkins, who, many maintain, had no peer in the saddle, falls the riding honours in the Manawatu Cup. Apart from piloting the winßcr in the successive years of 1894, 1895 and 1896, he also saluted tho judge it. 1900 and 1901. W. Price was another horseman who rode successive winners—in the years 1904 and 1905-—wliile A. Reed won in 1911 and 1913. The records also show that an M. McDonald piloted the successful performer in 1915 and 1924. Of the horsemen "who will be in attendance at the forthcoming fixture, two have had the pleasure of piloting winners. B. H. Morris won on Nobleman in 1918 and was associated with Historic in 1930, while J. Barry won on Mark Time in 1923 and again on Ladv Desmond in 1927. " VISITORS’ QUARTERS.

There will bo a big string of visiting horses at Mr F. J. Attfield’s stables during the Awapuni meeting. 11. Cults, of Riccarton, is bringing three horses, two of them being Fleeting Glance and Drumfire, while F. Christmas, also of lliccarton, will put up Red Heckle. ’File northerner, M. J. Carroll, will have Paganelli and Holly Holm; V. H. Colcllo, of Hastings, Shrewd ajid another; W. Bennett, of Masterton, a string of four which will include Retract and Takakua; W. Rayner three, the Fitzherbert Handicap favourite, Midinette, being one of the trio; C. Pritchard Autopay, Maypay and one other; J. T. Morris Nightmare, who will not, however, compete till tho second day; 1,. G. Morris three, A. Goodman one, “Brushor” Gray two, E. Penman three; M. Williams two; E. George one (Lady Quox); S. J. Reid three, B. Burgess four, G. Neich two, W. Hawthorne four, J. Low one and E. C. Haddock one. ENGLISH RACING. TWO-SHILLING “TOTE” TICKETS. The president of tho New Zealand Trotting Conference, Mr H. F. Nicoll, who returned this week by tho Rangitata, said that the trotting sport did not command in England the same respeot and support that it docs in the Dominion. He attended the October meeting at Newmarket and was much impressed with tho splendid totalisator equipment, notably' the facility with which tho figures could bo read, and tho arrangement for displaying tho investments on tho machine separately on a board, on front of the stands. This operated simultaneously with the machine and enabled tho “tote” betxing to bo observed without going io the xiachino. What* surprised him about the English totalisator system was adherence to the practice of selling 2s tickets. These comprised tho bulk of tho investments and involved a much greater task for the officials. It prolonged the work of paying out, too, and as tho races were run at half-liour intervals, successful investors had often not received their dividends when rhe next race started. A.J.C.
