MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Michael James Farrell, a labourer, aged 53, appeared before Messrs W. F. Durward and W. G. Ashworth, J.p.’s, in the Magistrate’s Court today, charged with receiving a gold chain valued at £B, part or the proceeds of a theft from Gustav Petersen, well knowing the same to have been dishonestly obtained. —On the application of Senior-Detective Quirke, who stated that further inquiries had to be made, accused was remanded for a week. A motorist, whose name was suppressed by the Bench, was charged with being in charge of a car on December 22 while in a state of intoxication. Mr Ongley appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty.—SeniorSergeant M’hitehouse said defendant had evidently been to a party last evening, and at 11.30 p.m. called into the police station to report having knocked a man off a cycle, and nothing had since been heard of the cyclist. Defendant was not staggering, but had had just enough liquor to affect his judgment. He was given the option of leaving his car and walking home or having proceedings taken against him. He was in a hilarious state and offered to drive the senior-sergeant all over the place, but was told that if he entered the car he would be arrested, and he was. It was not a bad case. Counsel said the case was a “bor-der-line” one. Defendant had walked into it himself after attending a convivial gathering to wind up tho business year. He was a man of good character, not given to drink, or a danger in a car. It was just a Christmas episode. Mr M’hitehouse said he knew accused well and was astonished when he walked in, as he did not think ho drank at all. Tho Bench imposed a fine of £lO upon accused. Counsel applied for the suppression of his name for business reasons, and tho Bench made an order for suppression, stating it was to bo hoped accused had had a lesson.
