RACING NEWS

TRACK WORK AT AWAPUNI. SOUTHERN HORSES APPEAR. (By ‘‘Binocular.’’) TIIO rain which fell. overnight did little wore than lay the dust at Awapuni, but a heavier shower was experienced at about 6 a.m. Both the outside of the course proper and the plough were available and a certain amount of fast work was undertaken, although none of the visitors was sent against the watch, operations losing in interest as a result. H. Cutts, of Riccarton, restricted Fleeting Glance and Drumfire to light tasks on the plough, wliile the two-year-old Silent Flight was worked in company with T. Georgo’s youngster Bettywscoed on the lame track. The last itumed pair were anxious to be given their heads, but they ■were only quickened up in the run down tho straight. Both are shapely sorts and look very promising. It was anticipated that Red Heckle would be among the southern, contingent, but the Manawatu Cup candidate failed to put in an appearance, the _ connections of tho Warplane gelding having" decided to forgo tho engagements ac the meeting. By tho defection of Tigerism and Red Heckle, the Manawatu Cup field lias suffered the loss of two favoured candidates. Apart from the above named. Royal Bengal is the only other acceptor at the meeting to have been officially withdrawn. . M. J. Carrol, of Frankton, had Paganelli and Hollv Holm out, but their tasks were restricted' to pacework on the course proper. The latter did not apner to hit out very freely and the Acre gelding would leominglv appreciate a softer track. Paganelli, who looks surprisingly well, struck out quite freely. ON THE COURSE PROPER. Catalogue and After Money, two candidates for the Nursery Handicap, were the first of the early workers- to put in an appearance. Jumping away at tho five furlongs post they ran tho first two furlongs in 28soc and the full journey in 1.8, finishing on terms. Lady Court, who docs not claim an engagement on tho opening day, did an easy

six furlongs in 1.23. Decree Nisi jumped away a 'couple of lengths in front of Tannin from tho six furlongs post, but tho latter drew up in the straight to finish tho better. Tho time was slow, however, they taking 1.26 1-5 to accomplish the task. After breakfast Colossian, Hint and Royal Jest went out to gallop five-furlongs. Royal Jest got away very badly, but betore they had reached the three furlongs pest had run up into the lead. However, she then weakened, Colossian and Hint drawing away to finish on terms after running tho full journey in 1.8 2-ssec. Wait And Sco went out to do three-quar-ter pace work, but she galloped very freoly to run the last three furlongs in 41sec. ON THE PLOUGH. Mercian Prince ran an easy five furlongs, taking 15socs to the furlong. Statuary finished a shade better than Jovspcar at tho close of seven furlongs* in 1.35, tho first half mile occupying 53 l-ssec. Morrath was going slightly better than Bco Acre at tho conclusion of seven furlongs run in 1.34 2-5, tho first half " mile being left behind in 53 lFsec. Leisure jumped away a little too smartly for Equitant and was still holding tho advantage 40 yards from tho post whon Equitant stopped suddenly to finish on threo logs. Leisure registered the smart time of 1.5. Nebulae and Beaconsfield registered quite a nice efTort when they ran five furlongs in 1.6 2-5, finishing together. Trojan Melody and Jean Ladosio wore partners in a six furlongs gallop. The latter, who strained a tendon at Woodville, dropped out of tho contest at the top of the straight and was very lamo in the near fore-leg when she was pulled up. Trojan Melody went on to complete his task in 1.20 2-5. Tho probability is that Jean Ladosio will bo rtired from racing. Minstrel Lad jumped away at tho finishing post and although not asked to speed up till tho closing stages, nevertheless ran tho last five furlongs in 1.9 and tho final three furlongs in 41. l-ssccs. Unless further rain falls, Minstrel Lad may not bo a runner on tho opening day.

THE MANAWATU MEETING. EVENLY BALANCED FIELD. RED HECKLE SCRATCHED. (By “Binocular.”) The Christmas holiday racing will • bo Uoliercd in on Monday when fixtures will bo conducted at various points in tho Dominion. Local enthusiasts will centre their attention, naturally enough, on'activities at Awapuni where threo days of racing will eventuate. However, they will not, be successive days for after Tuesday’s contests there will- bo an interval till Thursday at noon. At Ellerelio tho Auckland fixture will bo at longer intervale for. after opening on Boxing Day, activities will be continued on Wednesday and the Mondny and Tuesday of the succeeding week (New Year). Successive days will be conducted by the Taranaki, Dunedin and Westland Clubs, while the Waipukurau Club will hold a oneday fixturo on Monday. Brilliant racing and a beautiful spectacle aro promised patrons at the local gathering, for the fields aro evenly balanced, while the grounds aro, as of old, like a picture wherein elaborate colour schemes have been effected. The contrasting colours and variety in typo of flowers employed in tho work of artistry, reflects great, credit on thc_ head gardener. Tho course itself is carrying a good sole of grass close to tho rails, but tho majority of mentors will appreciate a soaking rain to take the jar out of tho ground. The club will operate the three-dividend system wherein fields of nine or more horses i are engaged, while the ten-shilling betting unit will also bo available to bettors. STARTING TIMES. The starting times for the various events are as under:—l2 noon., Tokomaru Highweight; 12.40 p.m., Maiden Plato; 1.25 p.m., Tararua Hack; 2.10 Manawatu Cup; 2.50 p.m., Nursery Handicap; 3.35 Gillies Handicap; 4.20 p.m., Fitzherbert Handicap; 5.3 p.m., Grandstand Handicap. THE HIGIIWEIGHT EVENT. The by the club of highweight for hurdle races is not very encouraging for owners of tho latter, but it certainly brought increased support when compared with last year, when only five accepted for the hurdles. Tho day* itself saw only four go to the post, which was far from encouraging to the club. Of the nine forming the Highweight field this year. Full Mark has tho best qualifications and tho handicappcr has allotted him 10.13—Albs ahead of Juggle. Chock Say is a particularly promising hack, but the handicappcr is not taking any chances with him. Holly Holm, who hails from M. J. Carroll’s stable in the north, enjoyed a very fair record in hack events last season and tho Acre gelding is quite well treated in comparison with Chock Say. Okopua will see tho distance out, while Invictus might come back to flat racing all tho better for his hurdle outings. Capo Fair has given promise and, with a strong horseman up. may display improvement. Tho trio most strongly sought after may be: Chock Say, Holly Holm, Invictus. UNSUCCESSFUL TO DATE.

Tho Maiden Plate, which is next on the programme, is restricted to horses which have still to get on tho winning list. However, thore aro quite a few who have recent form to their credit. Acrelict ran very creditable seconds at Levin and Feilding, while Beaconsfield, who had run a third at Levin, improved on that showing by running second to Senegal at Feilding. Copper King contested a hack sprint event under a lighter scale at Woodville to run second to Navaho, and on that performance may bo installed favourite. The Nigger Minstrel—Beilina gelding Dakar displayed distinct promise last season as a two-year-old, and although he-has not raced recently he will not lack friends. Takakua ran a second to Irish Chieftain at the Wellington winter meeting, but has raced littlo since. However, there are several whose capabilities are not so disclosed, yet might be quite ( capable of winning. Of the known form, the public may make their selections from: Copper King, Acrelict, Beaconsfield. STRONG CLASS OF HACKS. The Hack nine furlongs event supplies some good class performers, but Minstrel Lad has been well cared for by the handicapper in view of tho fact that he is essaying a distance at which ho has still to prove himself. However, from tho point of view of his efforts over shorter courses and his family connection, the handicappcr could not do otherwise. Saltpot has been a winner over tho distance more than once and his success at Levin indicated that the Aus-tralian-bred horso is well. Davistock and Plateau aro both smart sorts, but tho former may bo all tho bettor for a race. Should Plateau have tho services of B. Morris ho will como in for strong support. Tho southerner, Fleeting Glance, who comes next in order, has plenty of racing condition to assist her, and tho fact that she ran second to Rocket over a milo and a quarter at Ashburton makes her a distinct possibility. Lower down there aro Joyspear, Holly Holm, Flower and Tiger Gain, and the manner in which the. last named scored at Feilding draws attention to him. Backers will thus have a wide field for operations, but fancies may bo fined down on the day to: Plateau, Tiger Gain, Fleeting Glance. EVENLY BALANCED FIELD. With the hack distanco event disposed of, the 11 runners in tho Manawatu Cup will bo paraded—Tigerism having been withdrawn. The fact that there is not one horse weighted over 8.9 indicates tho even nature of field. Three horses, Seatoun, Cluny and Red Heckle, aro all weighted at 8.9, but probably patrons will not seriously consider the winner of 1930 in view of Soatoun’s absence from racing of late, although it may be dangerous to do so. Cluny won tho Wellington Handicap under tho minimum poundage in October last, and while ho has done littlo since, he was given a fast run on the second day at Woodville which' would assist towards winding hipi up again. Red Heckle failed at the Banks Peninsula

meeting last Saturday, and he has been withdrawn. Last year’s winner, Arrow Lad, is now required to carry an additional 71bs to what he did so successfully 12 months ago. Although ho is not getting any younger, the Arrowsmith gelding is certain to again run an honest race. The quartetto which follows in tho weights at short intervals, High Falutin’, Chopin, Grand Jury and Spoarful, must all enter into consideration, the first trio having filled the roles of winners or runners-up in their recent engagements, whilo Spearful gave cvidenco at Feilding that ho is coming back to form. Grand Jury was strongly fancied for the Feilding Cup, but he disappointed and, not having L.G. Morris in the saddle, he is not likely to attract the same measure of suport on this occasion." Shrewd and Joie do Val aro both possibilities and few of the 11 horses can bo actually ruled out. The

favourite may bo found from: High Faintin’ Spearful, Chopin. THE YOUNGSTERS. Ralphyllis, a winner over four furlongs at Hawke’s is required to give 51bs to the Taranaki representative Golden Hair, but the latter’s second to Midiati at Feilding premises to make her the favourite. Catalogue will be having his . first race, but Porotiti disclosed at Feilding that he is a youngster with a promising futuro ahead of him. Quietly ran second to Gipsy Love at Napier Park earlier in tho season and, provided she has gono on the right way in the interva 1 , she should figure near tho finish, a statement which might also bo applied to Lady Nan. Of the remainder, After Money appears to have the best claims, but probably this filly will not bo seen at her best till later on in tho season. Preferences may bo for: Golden Hair, Porotiti, Quietly. THE HACK SPRINTERS. The southerner Drumfire, who displayed such excellent form at Trentham in October, together with the consistent Solitaire 11, has been set at the head of tho weights in tho Gillies Hack Handicap, and the pair will no doubt attract a strong measure of support. . Navaho followed up a second at Levin with a win at Woodville, whereas Farmer enjoyed a win on the opening day at Feilding and then ran third on the second day after not'experiencing the best of runs in the straight. Good Hunting raced unsuccessfully over seven furlongs in open class company at the latter fixture, after having run second to Farmer on tho opening day, and ho now meets his fellow chestnut on 2!bs better terms. Of tho remainder, Princess Bell, Purse and Beaconsfield (if reserved) read best, but tho real fancies promise to come from:

Farmer, Good Hunting, Solitaire 11. A RESTRICTED FIELD. Like in tho hack class, the runners in the Fitzherbert Handicap—the open sprint—aro fewer than had been anticipated. Whilo his recent form has been somewhat disappointing, Autopay . represents top class and he fully merits his 9.5. l’aganelli, who comes in at 8.10., retains his form surprisingly well and on a firm track cqn be counted on to run a great race. Midinettc, winner of tho Feilding Stakes and run-ner-up to Souchong in the open sprint on the second day, is the form horso, and tho Limond filly is tho early favourite. Neither Great Charter nor Miladi have recent form to commend them and their prospects aro obscured in consequence. Posy and Trojan Melody do not impress particularly and tho favoured trio promise to bo: Midinette, Autopay, Paganelli. THE FINAL EVENT. The day’s activities will be brought to a close with the Grandstand Handicap—a nine furlong event. Paganelli again figures, being tho topweight on this occasion and, as he won over a mile and a quarter, tho distanco is by no means beyond him, although he is generally regarded as a sprinter. Ruanui is a somewhat uncertain customer for he has shown promise only to disappoint immediately following. However, he cannot be overlooked in consequence. Atholspear attended Shrewd home in the principal event on tho second day at Woodville, whilo Pomp was second to Fiji over seven furlongs at Feilding. Richfield attended the latter pair home, but probably he will be without tho services pf B. 11. Morris on Monday. Ivnollmero did not show much form at Feilding, . while Arajcan disappointed at both Levin and Woodville, although she was asked too much in tho early stages of her races on both occasions. Statuary is more than an outside chance, while both Saltpot and Greenhorn are two hacks who might well surprise. However, tho favourite promises to come from higher up in the scale of weights with preferences for: Ruanui, Altholspear, Arajcan. OTHER MEETINGS. AT ELLERSLIE. DEATH OF POLAZEL. SIR CIIAS. CLIFFORD’S LOSS. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 22. Sir Charles Clifford suffered a loss a.t his Stonyhurst stud this week, tho imported stallion Polazel, by Polymelus, being found dead- in his box. He was foaled in 1921, so was a young horse. Tho early part of his stud career was at the Vud of the late Mr A. F. Roberts, where Night Raid received most attention. Ho was purchased by Sir Charles Clifford last Easter, and this season was mated with a number of Stonyhurst matrons, as well as several good outside mares.

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Dec. 23. All Supremo was scratched to-day for all engagements at Ellerelic. Imamint was scratched for tho Robinson Handicap. CRASH INTO FENCE. REMARKABLE ESCAPE. Tho Australian lightweight rider E. Britt had a remarkablo escape from serious injury in tho Novice Handicap at Gosford recently. The lad had tho mount on Mineola, who was running near tho rails. Once in the straight it was necessary for Mineola to come away from tho rails. She responded well to Britt’s call, and 50 yards from tho post looked like having an easy victory. She then swerved to tho outside, however, and won by only a head from Snow Star and Ganmore. She was, nevertheless, going at a good rato, and after passing the judge’s box crashed through the outer rail and foil against the pickets skirting tho enclosure. Britt was thrown heavily to the ground, and it was at first thought that lie, too, had come in contact with the rails. The lad soon got to his foot, and beyond a shaking and a slight contusion developing on his head, ho was littlo worse for the experience.
