CRICKET IN AUSTRALIA.
ENGLISH TEAM AT HOBART. TASMANIA’S POOR START. HOBART, Dec. 23. The second match England v. Tasmania was commenced at Hobart today, but play was hampered bv rain soon after the commencement. Tasmania won the toss and batted, but started disastrously, its captain, Atkinson, failing to score, and Badcock made only four. Two wickets were down for 13 when heavy rain drove the players to the pavilion at 2.35. As the rain continued, play was abandoned. Following are the scores : TASMANIA.—First Innings. Atkinson, c Ames, b Allen 0 Badcock, c Ames, l> Verity 4 Green, not out 9 Burrows, not out 0 Total for two wickets 13 THE SECOND TEST MATCH. LARWOOD' MAY NOT PLAY. SYDNEY, Dec. 23. It is reported that Larwood strained Iris side in the second innings of the first Test at Sydney, since when he he has not bowled. His condition is causing anxiety and there is some doubt- whether he will bo able to take his place in the secoud Test, hut he will have a try-out on Monday. The newspapers are beginning to pay attention to the second Test. One newspaper says it is the business of Australian batsmen to find a way of combating the deliveries of Larwood and Voce. One would think Woodfull, Ponsford and the rest knew all there was to know about bowling. The writer believes they, do, and that the Sydney failures were due to England’s bowlers being in the peak of their form and to the surprising timidity of the batting.
SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. QUEENSLAND v. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. ADELAIDE, Dec. 23. In the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, Queensland in the first innings made 134 (Benstead 33, Marshall 33, Oxenliam 5). Tobin took three wickets for 48; Grimmet, six for 55. . South Australia in the first innings lost two wickets for 166 (Richardson 26, Nit sell ke 94, Lonergan 44 not out). RAIN PREVENTS PLAY AT MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, Dec. 23. Heavy rain to-day rendered play impossible in the .Sheffield Shield cricket match, New South Wales v. Victoria. UMPIRES FOR SECOND TEST. Messrs G. Hele (South Australia) and G. Borwick (New South Wales) have been appointed umpires for the second Test match, beginning at Melbourne on December 30. These two officials have been associated in several Test matches. They officiated in the first Test match' against the Englishmen at Sydney, and umpired the five South African Tests last season.
