Judging by the crowd which was in Feilding on Saturday night, retailers did much to make up the leeway, experienced in regard to shopping earlier in the week. Despite a heavy downpour of rain in the afternoon shoppers went about their business to the accompaniment of the time-hon-oured noises of squeakers and other articles enthusiastically worked by children. The heat both on Saturday and Christmas Day was very sultry and oppressive, a cooler atmosphere prevailing yesterday. POSTAL BUSINESS QUIET. As "'was expected earlier in the week, the postal business in Feilding showed a decline from previous years, Mr C. Clark, postmaster, reporting that the amount of material handled did not exceed that of a normal Easter. ACCIDENT ON TAONUI ROAD. About 3 o’clock on Saturday afternoon a motor cyclist, Mr llaymoiul Shepherd, of Feilding, was thrown to the ground and rendered unconscious as the result of a collision with a push bicycle which was proceeding in the same direction as the- motorist. It appears that Mr Shepherd with another cyclist, Mr C. C. I. Sims, was proceeding along the highway in the direction of Palmerston North with the intention of going to Foxton. Mr Shepherd noticed that the battery box on Mr Sim’s motor cycle was loose and he drew his attention to this. It was shortly afterwards that the collision occurred with the cyclist, who was proceeding in the same direction. The collision resulted in Mr Shepherd being thrown heavily to the road and in consequence he received head injuries which rendered him unconscious. Medical aid was called and after rendering first aid ordered Mr Shepherd’s removal to the hospital. _ Mr McDowall escaped injury. It is understood that Mr Shepherd is making satisfactory progress. NOTES. Cr. A. C. McCorkindale is acting Mayor during the absence on holiday of the Mayor (Mr C. E. Taylor) at New Plymouth.
