CUP
MANAWATU CUP TO SPEARFUL
Holiday racing' fixtures were in progress yesterday at Ellerslie, Awapuni, New Plymouth, Poverty Bay and Waipukurau in the North Island and at Dunedin and Westland in the South, while trotting meetings were held at Carterton, Ashburton, Gore and Westport.
At Auckland, Past Passage won the Cup from Great Star and Antique, while The Quorn scored in the Pailwav Handicap from Tea Trader. Awapuni had the honour of furnishing tlie first two winners, La Moderne winning the Queen’s Plate and Princess Doreen the Foal Stakes. At Awapuni Spearful scored from High P’alutin’ and Detract in the Manawatu Cup, while Autopay led Paganelli and Aliladi home in the Eitzli erbert Handicap.
CUP DAI AT_AWAPUNI. SPEARFUL'S GOOD EFFORT. AUTOPAY WINS THE SPRINT. Warm, pleasant weather conditions prevailed for the opening day of the Manawatu Racing (Hub's sinniner fixture at Awapuni, yesterday, when there was a large holiday crowd in attendance. \\ hilo favourites did not, enjoy a particularly good innings, only three winning, the totnlisalor returns were maintained surpri-ingly well, the sum of £21,865 10s being handled as conqiaved with £23.024 for Cup Day last year—a decreaso of £llsß 10s. AN KXCKLENT TRACK. The track had benefited by the rain of Saturday evening and it offered the best of racing conditions. As a result the times returned in some instances were remarkably fast, Autopay winning the Eitzherbert Handicap in the smart time of 1.12 2*5. Fields were of excellent dimensions throughout, and in live instances three dividends were returned. In the Manawatu Cup the New Zealand Cup winner of 1931. Spearful, showed further improvement on his Feiiding form to beat High Faintin’ and Retract with last year’s winnor, Arrow Lad, just outside the money. S. Anderson, who piloted Spearful, was the rider of Arrow Lad twelve months ago, while another coincident in connection with the race was that High Falutin’ once again filled the role of runner-up. Had Arrow Lad filled the third position, it would have been an exact reversal of the three placed performers of twelve months ago. In winning the Fitzheibert Handicap, Autopay registered an outstanding performance by carrying 9.5 to victory. The veteran Paganelli likewise recorded a good performance in filling the role of runner-up to Autopav. THE FAVOURITE BEATEN. Okopua was withdrawn from the Tokomaru Highweight for which Chock Say (£585) was a firm favourite from Holly Holm (£401) and the pair returned the dividends, although in reverse order. When the field had settled down Holly Holm had charge, but going into tlie hack Tranquillity and Easterly moved up into the lead. Half a mile from home Chock Say, who had been lying well back, moved up to attend the leaders into the straight, but. with heads straightened out Holly Holm challenged and in a good race home he finished best to win by a length from Chock Say, the favourite having a head advantage over Easterly. Tranquillity, Invictus, Full Mark and Juggle were all in lino two lengths baok. AWAPUNI TO THE FORE. In a field of 18 runners, Loakoon and Tikiri boing absentees, Copper King (£516) was made a firm favourite from Meritor (£362) and Acrelict (£292) for the Maiden Plate, but the Awapuni pair, Beaconsfield and Nebulae, filled the major positions with Maypay the third dividend payer. Meritor and Copper King led Acrelict, Maypay and Bearonsfield to the turn. Beaconsfield improved his position crossing the top, while Nebulae also moved up, although lie was still well back. At the distance Beaconsfield ran up to Maypay with Copper King also handy, but over the final pinch Beaconsfield drew clear, although the fast finish of Nebulae carried him to within, a neck of Beaconsfield with Maypay a length away. Takakua, Miss Hushabye, Acrelict and Thomist finished in a bunch. TIGER GAIN IMPRESSIVE.
elect, Tiger Gain, went to the front as the hold passed thror«h the straight with King Thontond, Fleeting Glance, Joyspeur and Bee Acre next, hut going along the hack Plateau ran up into a handy position behind the leader, while three furlongs from home Beo Acre and Minstreal Lad joined Plateau, with King Thomond aheud of Fleeting Glance. Turning into the straight Tiger Gain rar. wide, enabling Plateau to secure the lead, but Tiger Gain came again and in a close finish secured the verdict by a bead. There was a gap of three lengths to Fleeting Glance with King Thomond ahead of Flower and Kal"lU< 'AN IMPRESSIVE EFFORT. Save Red Heckle and Tigerism, who had been withdrawn prior to the day, all 10 acceptors went to the post for the Manawatu Cup. Spearful (£502) was favourito in a good betting race, High Faintin’ (£490) and Chopin (£484) being next in demand. After being boxed in on the rails for the major portion of the journey Spearful worked lree in the straight to stay or, too well fur the others. When the field had settled down Seatown and Shrewd were setting the pace from Arrow Lad, G’luny and Chopin, the first-named having run forward after being the last to move. Turning into the straight Seatown and Shrewd were still together ahead of Chopin, Retract, Spearful, Arrow Lad, Cluny and High Falutin’, but at the distance the leaders were beaten, Spearful forging to the front with Retract and High Falutin’ in pursuit. The Now Zealand Cup winner of 1931 went on to win by two lengths from High Faintin’, who got up in the last stride to head off Retract, with Arrow Lad another head away. Cluny and Chopin were next. CLEAR CUT VICTORY. Golden Hair (£703) and Porotiti (£495) dominated the betting in tire Nursery Handicap, although there was good support for Lady Nan. The judgment proved to be sound, only Lady Nan failing to pay a dividend. Golden Hair jumped into the lead immediately the tapes were lifted, Quietly, Silent Flight, After Money', Royal Jest and Porotiti being next in order. There was little change crossing the top, save that Porotiti had moved up and he sel out after the leader in the straight. Although the late challenger worked almost on terms half way home, the favourite drew away again to win by a length and a-quarter from Porotiti, with a gap of three lengths to Quietly. Lady Nan was fourth with After Money and Catalogue next, the last-named having run a good race after being slow to get away. FARMER WINS EASILY. Farmer (£996), Drumfire (£611) and Good Hunting (£465) were backed in that order for tlie Gillies Handicap, the field being reduced to eight runners by the defection of Navaho, Sporting Chance, Beaconsfield and Willowmere. Late Jest and Good Hunting showed the way to Farmer and Solitairo II fo the turn, but crossing the top Good Hunting bad taken charge from Late Jest and Solitaire 11. The favourite ran up to attend Good Hunting into the straight where Purse, who had been a long way back in the early stages, came round her field to be handy to the leaders as they straightened up. Farmer immediately ran to the front and he was untroubled to win by three lengths from Good Hunting, who held of! Late Jest by a length. White Squall was fourth with Purse next. AUTOPAY SCORES.
Midinette (£1090), Autopay (£622) and Paganelli (£589) eame in for good support for tho Fitzherbert Handicap, but tho favourite was well beaten, the finish resting between the other pair. Paganelli and Posy led Midinette in tho early stages, but half
Saltpot, Davistnck and Holly Holm were ■withdrawn from the Tararua Handicap for which Plateau (£639) and Fleeting Glanco (£534) dominated tho betting. The third
a mile from home Autopay joined Posy and Midinette with Paganelli next in attendance. Posy droped back crossing the top, leaving Autopay and Midinette to lead Paganelli into the straight. The favourite was beaten at the distance where Paganolii went up in pursuit of Autopay, but the topweight stalled off the challenge to win by half a length from tho northerner, with Aliladi, who had been last into the straight, four lengths back and just uhead of Midinette. SURPRISE TO FINISH. Ruanui (£712) was preferred to Richfield (£603) and Atholspear (£552) for tho Grandstand Handicap, but a surprise was in storo when Greenhorn, after racing in the rear throughout, came with a sustained run in tho straight to beat Richfield lor first place by a narrow margin. Statuary and Pomp led Atholspear and Arajean going away from home. They raced in that order along tho back and across the top with the exception that Arajean retired three furlongs from home. Richfield and Ruanui moved up at tho straight entrance and Richfiold appeared to have the race won when Greenhorn caino on the outside to beat him on the post. There was an interval of three lengths to Atholspear with Ruanui next. RACING IN DETAIL. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, of 350 sovs. One mile. 3 L’Allegro, 7.3 (Wiggins) 1 1 Silver Scorn, 8.5 (Eastwood) 2 2 Korokio, 8.3 (Reed) 3 Also started: 6 King's Archer 8.2, 8 Merry Damon 8.0, 5 Lord Val 7.9, 4 Cliromadync 7.9, 7 Chief Joy 7.8, 9 Llanore 7.0'. A length each way. Time, 1.38. L’Allegro led Chromadyno, King s Archer and Silver Scorn at the turn where Silver Scorn ran wide. L’Allegro stayed on to heat Silver Scorn, while Korokio came from far back for third. Merry Damon was fourth. A SPLENDID PERFORMANCE. FAST PASSAGE’S BRILLIANCE. Fast Passage recorded a slashing performance, comparable with tho best ever registered over two miles at Ellerslie, in winning the Auckland Cup in tho course and raco rocord time of 3.23 4-5. She was always handily placed, and after being third into the straight finished like a real racehorse to win decisively from Great Star, who was always in the picture and took charge half a milo from homo to lead round tho turn with Tigerism. Antique finished splendidly on tho rails to get third, and Tigerism was a good fourth, followed by Specdmint, Gold Trail Concontrato and Gay Idea. l-'ast Passage pulled up lame and was accorded a fine reception. Great Star was unlucky to meet such a good ono as tho winner, but just took second honours from Antique, who was a shade unlucky. Gay Crest and Tout lo Mond wore never dangerous over tho last half-mile, and Jaloux also stopped at tho end after moving up at tho half-mile. Concontrato met some trouble through the race, while Royal Artist and Gold Trail failed to stay after being up handy at tho turn. A BAD START. Tho Foal Stakes was marred to somo extent by a bad start, in which Pegged Exchange and Midian had their chances extinguished. Diatomous went out fast from No. 1 and set a pace that had the field well strung out, and ho was just headed at the end by Princess Doreen, who was his nearest attendant from the barrier-rise. Guarantee finished solidly to got third, and Impasto was a creditablo fourth. Rod Manfred disappointed, and never looked like winning, but Midian did well considering the distance he was loft. SILVER SCORN BEATEN.
Silver Scorn suffered her first defeat in tho Christmas Handicap, when sho wont under to L’Allegro. Sho mado a dash on tho outside of the pacemakers, L’Allogro, Chromadyno, and King’s Archer, entering tho straight, but could not take tho measure of L’Allegro, who wont on romarkably well in tho last furlong. Korokio lost a forward position in the middle stages, but finished on strongly to get third, ahead of Merry Damon, who covered a fair amount of ground. As she was giving ago and 171 b to tho winner, Silver Scorn was by no means disgraced, more especially as she went out wido in tho straight, and tho winner was always on tho rails. Chromadyno and King’s Archer went well for seven furlongs, and then collapsed.—Dominion.
